Berryhill Post 165 manager Dan Cronkright was hoping his hitters would face some decent pitching this weekend. Old friend and former Berryhill standout Joe McDonald was more than happy to grant that wish.
The pitching combo of Mitch Vamos and Nolan Hoffman led the Capital City Kings, who are managed by McDonald, to a 6-3 win over Berryhill on the first day of pool play at the Gabby Mills July Fourth Invitational, held at Northwood’s Gerace Stadium.
Earlier in the day, Berryhill (6-1) kicked off play in the Red Division with a 9-1 win over Adrian Post 275.
Cronkright said that facing some tough pitching against Capital City was "good for us."
“Their first pitcher was pretty tough. He had a different arm angle, a different arm slot, and it was tough to pick the ball up sometimes," he noted. "We were out front a lot, trying to pull everything, and with those sidearmers, you need to take it back up the middle. … We haven’t seen many pitchers (thus far this summer). It’s good for us to play.”
Cronkright added that he always likes competing against McDonald.
“I really enjoy Joe. His dad coached for us for many years, and Joe and (his brother) Tim both played for Berryhill," Cronkright said. "He’s a class act. I enjoy playing with him and against him.”
Friday’s game against the Kings got off to a decidedly rocky start for Post 165, as Berryhill pitcher Andrew Young struggled mightily with his control right out of the chute. Young surrendered three runs on a triple, a hit-batsman, and an assortment of walks and wild pitches in the top of the first inning before eventually being relieved by Blake Waibel.
Capital City tacked on three more runs in the third on an RBI single by JD Garmen, an RBI triple by Logan Todd, and an RBI double by Easton Rogers to make it 6-0 before Waibel settled in and held the Kings in check from there.
Berryhill tried to battle back but had trouble sustaining rallies. Post 165 cut it to 6-2 in the fifth, as Nolan Sanders and Logan McCoy both walked and Derek Beougher tripled to right-centerfield to score both runners.
McCoy provided Berryhill’s only other run, tripling to deep rightfield and scoring on a wild pitch in the seventh.
Hoffman earned the win, going four innings and allowing three runs on three hits and two walks. Vamos took a no-decision, pitching three-plus scoreless innings and giving up three hits and two walks.
Young took the loss, allowing three runs on a hit and four walks in 1/3 inning. Waibel was solid in relief, going the final 5 2/3 innings and allowing three runs on five hits and two walks, while striking out seven.
“Blake did a very nice job. I’m very happy," Cronkright said. "He was using three different pitches – fastball, curveball, and change – and all three were very effective. He battled for us.”
Cronkright added that he is confident Young will bounce back from his rough outing.
“I think everybody has one of those days. He had good velocity, good snap on his breaking ball, but he just had trouble locating," Cronkright noted. "He’s 16 years old, and we’re going to keep throwing him out there, and he’s going to work his way through it.”
In Berryhill's win over Adrian early in the morning, the game was tied at 1-1 until Post 165 plated eight runs in the fourth inning.
Al Money singled to lead off the rally, and McCoy and Griffin Clark followed with back-to-back doubles. Avain Rivera had an RBI single in the inning, while Beougher and Al Warner both drew bases-loaded walks to force in runs, and Sanders was hit by a pitch with bases loaded to plate another run.
Lane Kloha earned the win, going five strong innings and allowing one run on only one hit and two walks, while fanning five.
“We need to play games, and this was a great day for us," Cronkright said. "We got a little tired at the end, but we’ll regroup and start all over tomorrow and have another good day.”
Also in the Red Division on Friday, Gladwin Post 171 went 1-1, bouncing back from a 5-3 loss to Capital City to beat the Detroit Warriors 3-2 in a fast-paced and well-played afternoon game.
“We’d have liked to been 2-0, of course, but 1-1 is the best we could do today, so we’ll take that and move on," said Gladwin manager Terry Brokoff, adding that he really likes the chemistry of his team. " ... They're great kids. For a long time, we’ve had good kids. The kids are believing and supporting each other, and they have each other’s backs.”
Gladwin (14-3) took a 1-0 lead against the Warriors in the bottom of the third when Trent Reed singled and later came home on an RBI single by Carter Campau.
After the Warriors countered with two runs in the top of the fourth to take a 2-1 edge, Post 171 came right back in the bottom half of the inning to regain the lead for good.
Troy Porter led off the rally by getting hit by a pitch, and Blaise Millar followed with a double to leftfield. Avery Goldensoph then singled to drive in Porter and tie the score. Two batters later, Carson Oldani laid down a beautiful squeeze bunt to plate another run and give Gladwin a 3-2 lead which would hold up.
Owen Franklin earned the victory, going six innings and surrendering two runs on four hits and six walks. He struck out 11.
Campau picked up the save, throwing the final inning and allowing one hit and one walk.
“Owen threw a really good game. He got a little tired at the end, so I had to bring in Carter, but the boys have pitched pretty well all day," said Brokoff. "In the first game we gave up four unearned runs, and that kind of sealed our fate in that game.”
“ ... We’ve got a decent pitching staff," he added. "We’ve just got to play good ball behind them.”
Against Capital City, Jarrett Inscho took the loss, going six innings and allowing five runs, only one earned, on seven hits and three walks with five strikeouts.
Reed had three hits and scored three runs, while Campau had two hits and two runs batted in, and Franklin drove in Post 171's other run.
