In the penultimate edition of SmackDown from inside the ThunderDome, WWE delivered one of the best television matches of the virtual fan era when Kevin Owens met Sami Zayn in a Last Man Standing match.
Owens and Zayn engaged in a brutal war that saw both men put through tables and battered and bruised while not only competing for dominance in the latest match in their years-long saga, but also a spot in the Money in the Bank ladder match. After splitting their matches at WrestleMania and Hell in a Cell, Owens got the big win in the rubber match, forcing Zayn to stay down for the full 10 count.
CBS Sports was with you all night with recaps and highlights of all the action from the ThunderDome inside Yuengling Center in Tampa.
Kevin Owens beats Sami Zayn in Last Man Standing match
Kevin Owens def. Sami Zayn in a Last Man Standing match for a spot in Money in the Bank. Owens went right after Zayn from the opening bell, knocking him from the ring and tossing him around ringside. The battle continued outside the ring, with Owens hitting a swanton off the ringside barricade onto Zayn on the floor. Things turned when Owens tried to put Zayn through the announce table, only to be thrown onto it by Zayn. Owens stacked two tables on the floor and tried to superplex Zayn through them from the top rope but Zayn fought him off. The tables did come into play shortly after, when Zayn shoved Owens off the top rope. Owens managed to stand before the count of 10, however, and the match continued.
Zayn hit a series of Heluva Kicks but Owens was again able to beat the count, this time by sliding off the ring apron and to a standing position on the floor. Owens hit a pop-up powerbomb and then a stunner. He then powerbombed Zayn through the announce table, another table and then onto the ring apron, finally getting the 10 count to win the match.
Owens and Zayn have a rare kind of chemistry when they are in the ring together, so comfortable and experienced with each other that it consistently creates magic. With added stakes and given time, they did it once again. Even the finish had something special, with Owens finishing using the same powerbomb on the apron he delivered to Zayn when Zayn was NXT champion and Owens made his debut. Grade: A
Edge brutalizes Jimmy Uso
Edge opened the show with an in-ring promo, saying that WrestleMania was supposed to be the culmination to his 10-year story, returning from retirement to win the universal championship from Roman Reigns. When that didn't happen, it rattled him and made him think back on the match and how close he'd come if not for Daniel Bryan being in the match and Jey Uso's interference. Now, however, he knows that he can beat Reigns one-on-one -- and that Reigns knows the same thing.
Jimmy Uso spent the show telling Paul Heyman that he would handle business for Reigns -- who had not appeared on the show -- and would face down Edge to end the show. Edge later said that he knew the situation could only lead to an attack and double team situation when Reigns entered the picture. At the end of the show, Uso called Edge to the ring and Edge said that Reigns had laid a perfect trap. The perfect trap for Uso. Uso and Edge brawled until Edge locked him in a crossface, forcing Uso to tap despite it not being a match. Edge then delivered a spear and went seeking a chair, breaking a piece off and closing the show using it to lock Uso in another crossface.
More good story beats in the career-defining run of Roman Reigns' career -- and without Reigns even appearing on the show. Edge delivers one of the best promos in the entire locker room and did so again early in the show, and showed a great mean streak in the show-closing beatdown.
