Olympics swimming results: Four Olympic records broken, US takes home three medals - Sporting News

Hungary's Kristof Milak held the Olympic record in the men's 100-meter butterfly for all of six minutes.

Milak, who holds the Olympic record in the 200 butterfly, set the mark with a 50.31-second 100 in his semifinal Thursday. Then American Caeleb Dressel then took him down in the second semi, becoming the first swimmer to finish under 50 seconds in the event at the Olympics with a time of 49.71. He earned the top spot in Friday's final.

That race set the tone for what would become a night of records. South African Tatjana Schoenmaker broke her Olympic record with a world-record time of 2:18.95 to win gold in the 200 breaststroke; ROC's Evgeny Rylov added his second gold medal this year with an Olympic-record time of 1:53.27 in the 100 backstroke; and Australian Emma McKeon set an Olympic mark in winning the 100 freestyle gold in 51.96 seconds.

Though the U.S. did not earn gold in any of the four finals, it was well-represented on the podium. Lilly King and Annie Lazor earned silver and bronze, respectively, behind Schoenmaker in the breaststroke, while Ryan Murphy took the silver behind Rylov in the backstroke. Michael Andrew almost reached the podium in the 200 individual medley but fell to fifth as China's Wang Shun took the gold. Two more Americans, Phoebe Bacon and Rhyan White, earned spots in the women's 200 backstroke final along with Canada's Kylie Masse.

Sporting News provided live updates and highlights from each event during the sixth day of Olympic swimming finals.
