Little League to allow up to 3,000 spectators per day access to world series games in August - PennLive

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT-Up to 3,000 spectators a day will be permitted to watch the Little League World Series next month but they will be restricted to the bank and grass area behind the fences of Howard J. Lamade and Volunteer stadiums, respectively.

The goal has been to allow the public but at the same time minimize the possible COVID-19 exposure to the participants, Stephen D. Keener, president and CEO of Little League, said Friday in making the announcement.

This is much different than going to a professional sports event or some other venue because at the series players interact with the public on a regular basis, he pointed out. “We want to minimize that this year,” he said.

Information on how to pre-register for up to four digital complex access tickets is available at littleleague.org/visit, he said. They are good for just one day and do not permit re-entry, he said.

“We are doing this to be fair and allow as many as possible to spend a day with us,” Keener said. The series in South Williamsport runs Aug. 19 to 29.

Those wishing to attend multiple times will have to pre-register for each day, he explained.

The only people permitted in the stands will be special officials and those holding the 250 tickets to be distributed to each of the 16 U.S. teams, he said

The 250 tickets will be good only for games that team plays, he said. However, those people could join the public behind the outfield fences to watch other games, he said.

The only gate to the complex that will be open is behind the left field fence of Volunteer Stadium, he said.

Little League is taking extra precautions at the regional tournaments and the baseball and softball world series because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Those who obtain complex access tickets are asked to abide by these guidelines:

  • Do not enter if you feel sick, have a fever, or in the past 14 days have had any symptoms of COVID-19 or exposure to someone with COVID-19.
  • Unvaccinated visitors are strongly encouraged to wear masks. Vaccinated visitors may wear masks at their comfort.
  • Practice physical distancing, wash and/or sanitize hands frequently and thoroughly and do not crowd in lines in common areas or at points of interest.

Due to lack of space, only family and friends of players will be allowed to attend the regional baseball and softball tournament games all of which will be televised by the ESPN family of networks, he said.

A limited number tickets will be available for the public outside the seating areas at the softball world series in Greenville, N.C., he said.

Keener confirmed plans celebrate the 75th anniversary of the baseball world series in 2022 and to expand the number of teams to 20.

“What we are hoping is we can open the gates as usual and allow thousands of people to come in and enjoy the celebration with us,” he said.
