For the fifth consecutive Olympics, the United States was able to win the women's gymnastics all-around gold medal. Even with Simone Biles out of action, Team USA was able to earn a victory thanks to a stellar performance from Suni Lee.
Lee was embroiled in a close, competitive final all day. Her rotation consisted of herself, teammate Jade Carey, Russian Olympic Committee members Angelina Melnikova and Vladislava Urazova, Belgium's Nina Derwael and Brazil's Rebeca Andrade.
Throughout the event, the players jockeyed for the lead. Andrade held it through the first two rotations, the vault and uneven bars. But after a strong beam routine, Lee was able to take a small lead over Urazova and Andrade. During the floor competition, Lee was helped by Andrade stepping out of bounds twice as she held on to earn the victory.
Lee posted a mark of 57.433 during the all-around competition and ended up winning by less than 0.2 points over Andrade. Melnikova and Urazova were within 0.5 points of the lead as well.
Since 2004, the United States has won five consecutive gold medals in the women's all-around competition. Suni Lee is the latest to win while Carly Patterson (2004), Nasta Liukin (2008), Gabby Douglas (2012) and Simone Biles (2016) were the previous four.

Olympics gymnastics live results, highlights from women's all-around finals
8:59 a.m. — Here are the final standings for the all-around final. Lee takes home the gold, Andrade gets the silver and Melnikova gets the bronze. Jade Carey finishes in eighth place after posting the third-best floor score of the day (13.966).
Place | Gymnast | Country | Score |
1 | Suni Lee | United States | 57.433 |
2 | Rebeca Andrade | Brazil | 57.298 |
3 | Angelina Melnikova | Russian Olympic Committee | 57.199 |
4 | Vladislava Urazova | Russian Olympic Committee | 56.966 |
5 | Mai Murakami | Japan | 56.032 |
6 | Nina Derwael | Belgium | 55.965 |
8:56 a.m. — Andrade gets a 13.666. She clinches the silver but Suni Lee will be the gold medal winner. Team USA's streak of gold medal winners continues for a fifth consecutive Olympics.
8:54 a.m. — Oh boy, Andrade stepped out of bounds twice — once early and once on her final move of the contest. Will that be enough to give Lee the gold? It's up to the judges.
8:52 a.m. — Wow. Suni Lee posted a terrific floor routine that was nearly flawless. "She couldn't have done any better," said the NBC broadcast. All told, she is given a 13.700. That puts her into first place. She'll get at least a silver medal. Now, it all depends on what Rebeca Andrade does in her upcoming floor routine.
8:47 a.m. — Angelina Melnikova finishes her floor routine with a 13.966. That puts her a bit ahead of her teammate Urazona, and Melnikova is currently in first place. Suni Lee steps onto the floor next.
8:45 a.m. — Officially, Derwael posted a 13.433 on the floor while Urazova logged a 13.400. Urazova will finish ahead of Derwael.
8:42 a.m. — Nina Derwael and Vladislava Urazova both put together clean routines. Neither stepped out of bounds. Urazova will be in the running for a medal and could have a shot at gold depending on how Suni Lee and Rebeca Andrade do.
8:33 a.m. — Lee will go third-to-last on the floor. Andrade and Carey will be behind her. As such, Andrade will know the score she needs to earn an Olympic gold.
8:31 a.m. — Jade Carey fell to 12th place after her fall on the beam. She has a score of 40.233, so she won't be in the medal hunt. She'll still have a chance to finish in the top 10, as will Canada's Brooklyn Moors, who is in 10th place with a mark of 40.299.
8:28 a.m. — Heading into the final rotation, Suni Lee has taken a lead, albeit a small one. She is ahead of Vladislava Urazova by less than 0.2 points while Rebeca Andrade is just over 0.2 points back. Angelina Melnikova is 0.5 points back. It's anyone's game.
Place | Gymnast | Country | Score |
1 | Suni Lee | United States | 43.733 |
2 | Vladislava Urazova | Russian Olympic Committee | 43.566 |
3 | Rebeca Andrade | Brazil | 43.532 |
4 | Angelina Melnikova | Russian Olympic Committee | 43.233 |
5 | Nina Derwael | Belgium | 42.532 |
8:26 a.m. — Andrade makes it five consecutive beam routines without a fall, on a day that has been full of them. The Brazlian gymnast, who is one of the few individuals at the game without a team, posts a 13.566.
8:23 a.m. — Lee's score on the balance beam was a 13.833. She'll be among the top two going into the final rotation regardless of what Rebeca Andrade does.
8:20 a.m. — Suni Lee saved herself from falling on the beam during a Wolf turn and put forth a terrific beam routine. She will have a chance at gold pending the performance of the top group on the floor routine.
8:16 a.m. — We're now through three beam routines without a fall. Angelina Melnikova posted a 13.700 after her teammate, Urazova, logged a 14.200. Urazova will lead Melnikova and Derwael. Now, it's all about what Andrade and Lee can do. Suni Lee is up next on the beam.
8:11 a.m. — Both Derwael and Urazova stayed on the beam and put together excellent routines, with Urazova's being particularly impressive. They will remain near the top of the crowded leaderboard.
8:02 a.m. — Oh no, Jade Carey fell during her beam routine. She finished and didn't get hurt, but it's going to be tough for her to make a medal push now after scoring an 11.533 on the apparatus.
8:00 a.m. — Up next for the top six is the balance beam. This is another one of Lee's specialties, as she finished third on it during qualifying. It's also Carey's worst event, as she finished 41st on it during qualifying. Among the other top competitors, Vladislava Urazova is the one to watch. She posted a 14.000 on the beam during qualifying, good for the eighth-best on the day.
7:55 a.m. — We're halfway through the all-around final and it's anybody's game, though it looks like someone from the first rotation will emerge with a win. Suni Lee moved into second place after the bars and is less than 0.1 points behind the leader. Meanwhile Jade Carey dropped to sixth but is still well within striking distance. The top five competitors are separated by 0.8 points and Carey is just 1.266 points off the pace.
Place | Gymnast | Country | Score |
1 | Rebeca Andrade | Brazil | 29.966 |
2 | Suni Lee | United States | 29.9 |
3 | Angelina Melnikova | Russian Olympic Committee | 29.533 |
4 | Vladislava Urazova | Russian Olympic Committee | 29.366 |
5 | Nina Derwael | Belgium | 29.166 |
6 | Jade Carey | United States | 28.7 |
7:49 a.m. — What an effort from Suni Lee on the bars. She puts forth another excellent routine and managed to save herself from a potential fall. She stuck the landing and hit on her skills for a 15.300, the highest score on the uneven bars so far today.
7:47 a.m. — Both competitors from the ROC performed well on the uneven bars. Vladislava Urazova notched a 14.866 while Angelina Melnikova logged a 14.900. The uneven bars are a strength of the ROC, so this wasn't a surprise.
7:41 a.m. — Belgium's Nina Derwael posts a 15.266 on the uneven bars. She is Suni Lee's main rival on this event, so Lee will be looking to post a similar score when her turn is up.
7:36 a.m. — Carey's completed her uneven bars routinee largely without issue. She had a flat handstand and didn't get to the low bar as quickly as she was supposed to, but she didn't suffer any falls en route to a solid 13.500. That's lower than her qualifying score in the event — the difficulty alone was 0.3 points lower in Thursday's competition — but she will remain in the hunt with one of her best events, floor, still yet to come.
7:33 a.m. — The leader, Brazil's Rebeca Andrade, put up a terrific effort on the bars. It was very clean and she stuck the landing. She posts a strong 14.666, nearly 0.5 points better than her qualifying number, and has put some pressure on Carey and Lee to match her on the bars.
7:28 a.m. — For those wondering, Jade Carey posted a 14.133 (20th place) on the uneven bars during qualifying. It was her third-best event of the four behind vault and floor.
7:25 a.m. — Up next for Team USA will be the uneven bars. This is Suni Lee's chance to make up some ground on Andrade and Carey. After getting a great score on her weakest event, Lee will look to make the leap toward the top of the leaderboard.
7:21 a.m. — After one rotation, Carey and Lee are well-positioned to make a run for the gold. They are in second and fourth place respectively. Here's a look at the leaderboard so far:
Place | Gymnast | Country | Score |
1 | Rebeca Andrade | Brazil | 15.300 |
2 | Jade Carey | United States | 15.200 |
3 | Angelina Melnikova | Russian Olympic Committee | 14.633 |
4 | Suni Lee | United States | 14.600 |
5 | Vladislava Urazova | Russian Olympic Committee | 14.500 |
7:04 a.m. — Jade Carey's first vault is in. She landed her vault with a tiny hop at the end on one of the most difficult vaults in the competition. She logs a 15.200 and is just 0.1 points behind Rebeca Andrade after the event.
7:01 a.m. — For those wondering, Lee had scored a 14.333 in qualfying, good for 23rd on the vault. She would've tied for 12th in qualifying with a 14.600, so needless to say, her improvement will have a positive impact on her chances of winning the gold.
6:58 a.m. — And her comes Suni Lee on the vault. She sticks a landing on it. A very good start for the 18-year-old, as she picks up a 14.600 on the vault, an event that is arguably her weakest event.
6:55 a.m. — The broadcast makes a good point about this being the third day of competition in the last five for women that were involved in the team final. If there's any fatigue from these participants and top competitors, that could benefit the individual gymnasts, like Jade Carey, who didn't participate in the team competition.
6:53 a.m. — All right, here we go. The gymnasts are warming up, and Suni Lee will be the first American to compete in an event on the vault.
6:47 a.m. — We're about to get underway. Here's a Jade Carey highlight posted by Team USA to get you pumped up.
6:35 a.m. — Just 15 minutes left until the event officially gets underway. It's set to begin at 6:50 a.m. ET, or 7:50 p.m. Tokyo time.
6:31 a.m. — Lieke Wevers from the Netherlands is the alternate who replaced Canada's Ellie Black, who had to withdraw due to an ankle injury. Wevers, 29, scored a 53.365 in qualifying, good for 32nd overall in the competition, and finished no higher than 23rd overall on any single event.
6:28 a.m. — The two Team USA competitors will be in a group of six gymnasts that includes most of their strongest competition for the event. Brazil's Rebeca Andrade finished second in qualifying; Belgium's Nina Derwael was the only gymnasts to best Suni Lee on the uneven bars in qualifying; and, of course, Angelina Melnikova and Vladislava Urazova were key members of the ROC's gold-medal-winning team.
6:21 a.m. — The rotation order is in for Thursday's competition. Suni Lee and Jade Carey will begin on the vault. Carey placed second on the vault during all-around qualifying behind only Rebeca Andrade, so she'll have a chance to get off to a strong start.
6:10 a.m. — In case you need a reason to get excited about today's event, Team USA shared an incredible slo-mo look at Suni Lee on the uneven bars, her best event.
