Who won the NASCAR race yesterday? Complete results for Homestead race - Sporting News

The driver who won the NASCAR race yesterday now has three victories in 2020, the most of any driver in the Cup Series.

Denny Hamlin passed Chase Elliott with 29 laps to go and never relinquished his lead. Elliott pressured Hamlin in the closing laps but scraped the wall, allowing the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota a chance to cruise to the win. It marked the 40th victory of Hamlin's Cup Series career.

Elliott held on to finish second, just ahead of Ryan Blaney, Tyler Reddick and Aric Almirola. Reddick's fourth-place finish combined with teammate Austin Dillon's seventh-place finish made for a great night for Richard Childress racing. Similarly surprising was rookie Christopher Bell's eighth-place finish ahead of William Byron and Brad Keselowski.

Below are the complete results from Sunday's race at Homestead, which was delayed by weather (rain once and then lightning twice) multiple times.

Who won the NASCAR race at Homestead?

Hamlin's win Sunday marked his third career Cup Series victory at Homestead, breaking a tie with teammate Kyle Busch for the most at the track among active drivers.

Hamlin also won the first two stages Sunday.

The win was somewhat predictable considering how good Joe Gibbs Racing has been since NASCAR's return to live action last month (even though Hamlin one of only two JGR drivers who have won in 2020).

Through the first four races, the four Gibbs teams had an average finish of 24.5 and didn’t crack the top 10. But going into the Homestead race, in the seven races back, their average finish has been 7.86, with a 20th-place effort at Bristol being the only result outside the top 10.

Hamlin benefited from what became a race that featured long runs. Elliott had good long-run speed, too, but just not enough.

The two favorites entering Sunday's race, Kevin Harvick, struggled uncharacteristically. Harvick had issues on pit road that snowballed into a nightmare of a race, and Truex simply didn't have enough speed to compete.
