Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) announces its sales, production, and export results for May 2020 as well as the cumulative total from January to May 2020, including those for subsidiaries Daihatsu Motor Co., Ltd. and Hino Motors, Ltd.
The main points are as below.
Worldwide sales in May were 68.2 year-on-year recovering faster than expected*
*April-June quarter averaged about 60 percent y/y (announced on May 12 of this year when the financial results were released)
April and May are recovering at 53.7 percent and 68.2 percent, respectively. We expect June to be even better than May.
U.S.
- Recovery accelerated in April and May with sales at 46.1 percent and 74.3 percent year-on-year, respectively.
- Sales to individual customers, excluding fleets, recovered significantly in April and May, recovering 50 percent and 86 percent, respectively.
China
- April and May were much higher than the previous year at 100.2 percent and 120.1 percent, respectively.
- Attracted by online events during the holidays and, strong sales of new models such as the RAV4 (approximately 17,000 units) affected.
Japan
- Due to the impact of the stay-at-home requests (April 7-May 31), April and May were 79.9 percent and 66.6 percent, respectively, compared to the previous year. However, due to of the stay-at-home requests the sales volume is expected to recover in June.
- During the same period, new models continued to perform well in May, with the Yaris exceeding its sales target of around 10,000 units.
