CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Cleveland Clinic has updated its coronavirus restrictions to allow most patients admitted to a hospital to designate one visitor for the duration of their stay.

The most recent change to the hospital’s visitor policy applies only to patients who have tested negative for the virus that causes COVID-19 or are asymptomatic. The Clinic has separate restrictions for patients who have tested positive for the coronavirus, according to the visitor policy.

Designated visitors can see inpatients once per day between the hours of 7 a.m. and 9 p.m., unless a compassionate exemption applies. They must show ID as they enter the building.

Visitors are still prohibited for inpatients hospitalized for a solid organ transplant and adult patients in Behavioral Health Units. Pediatric patients on Behavioral Health units will be allowed two parent or guardian visitors.

Every visitor to a Cleveland Clinic facility is required to wear a face mask unless they have a health condition that prevents them from wearing one. The Clinic is providing masks to visitors who do not have them.

The Clinic is also performing temperature checks on all visitors. Once inside, visitors are asked to respect social distancing guidelines and practice good hand hygiene.

The Clinic has gradually eased visitor restrictions since the outset of the coronavirus pandemic. The hospital system is now allowing one visitor for every patient admitted to the hospital or in the emergency room, and two parents or guardians for each pediatric patient.

Visitors are still being prohibited at the Clinic’s family health centers, medical office buildings and physician offices. Exceptions include one visitor for adults having major surgeries or procedures and pregnant mothers receiving fetal ultrasounds. Elderly patients, those with special needs and patients with cancer may also bring one guest.

Hospitals throughout Northeast Ohio restricted visitors as the coronavirus struck earlier this year. The Clinic, MetroHealth, University Hospitals and the VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare System all announced restrictions intended to limit the spread of the virus.

University Hospitals is also allowing one visitor for inpatients and two visitors for pediatric patients as of Monday. MetroHealth is allowing two visitors for both inpatients and pediatric patients, while the VA is allowing two visitors.
