BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (WXOW)- The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced plans to return to competitive athletics this winter.
After taking a vote, the MIAC's President Council is allowing basketball, hockey, indoor track and field, and swimming and diving to participate in regular-season competition. Spectators will not be allowed at any of these MIAC contests.
Beginning February 6, MIAC basketball and hockey programs are set to begin a seven-game conference schedule. The schedules follow a round-robin format, allowing each team to play every other team once.
Basketball games are set to be played at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesdays and 2:00 p.m. on Saturdays, with midweek and weekend hockey contests set for 7:00 p.m. pending facility availability.
Additionally, teams can schedule up to four non-conference contests starting January 29. Full basketball and hockey schedules for all MIAC teams can be found here.
MIAC indoor track and field and swimming and diving programs do not assign conference schedules. As such, these teams are able to participate in regular-season meets at the discretion of each institution.
The MIAC also announced it will not host winter-sport playoffs or conference postseason championship meets. However, teams or individuals that qualify for NCAA championship competitions can participate.
The team with the best winning percentage, while also completing at least 51 percent of their schedule, will be named the MIAC champion and automatically qualify to participate in the NCAA Tournament.
All those that have opted out of conference play can compete in non-conference play during the NCAA-approved competition window. Teams may also continue to participate in practices, strength and conditioning, skill development, and leadership programming.
In addition, the MIAC continues to follow the NCAA Division III blanket waiver issued last October, which states that all student-athletes may compete up to the established dates of competition maximums without being charged a season of intercollegiate participation during the 2020-21 academic year.
The MIAC continues to work on plans for fall and spring sport competition. All MIAC programs follow safety guidelines recommended by the NCAA Medical Advisory Board and Minnesota Department of Health.
