U.S. Olympic trials for track and field: Day 1 live updates, results as action begins at Hayward Field - OregonLive

Day 1 of the U.S. Olympic trials for track and field have begun at Hayward Field in Eugene, and Friday’s action includes two finals: the men’s shot put and the men’s 10,000 meters.

Ryan Crouser, the former Barlow High School star, is the favorite in the shot put, and Crouser had the best throw of the day in qualifying at 75 feet, 2 1/2 inches. The shot put final is set for 6:30 p.m.

The men’s 10,000 final includes six runners with Oregon ties. That race goes off at 7:25 p.m.

The events on the track begin just after 4 p.m. Friday. The meet will be televised on NBCSN beginning at 4 p.m., and on NBC at 7 p.m. All field events will be live streamed on NBCOlympics.com.

Women’s 1,500 first round: Jenny Simpson, Dani Aragon and Elle Purrier St. Pierre won their heats, leading the field of 24 runners who moved on to Saturday’s semifinals.

Women’s 400 first round: Allyson Felix won her heat in the women’s 400 in 50.99 seconds. Quanera Hayes crossed in 52.34 to win the second heat. Wadeline Jonathas led the way in third heat, winning in 50.64. And Kendall Ellis finished in 51.02 to win the final heat. The semifinals are Saturday night.

Men’s 400 first round: The heat winners were Trevor Stewart (44.75), Michael Cherry (44.86), Elija Godwin (44.81) and Wil London (45.46). They lead a field of 16 into Saturday night’s semifinals.

Men’s 800 first round: Abraham Alvarado, Bryce Hoppel and Shane Streich finish 1-2-3 in the first heat. In the second heat, Donavan Brazier of the Portland-based Pete Julian training group won in 1:45.00, followed by Brannon Kidder and Isaiah Harris. Michael Rhoads and Isaiah Jewett won their heats, with Clayton Murphy taking second in Jewett’s heat.

Women’s high jump qualifying: Vashti Cunningham and Rachel McCoy were among the 12 who qualified for Sunday’s high jump final. Jelena Rowe no-heighted.

Here are the athletes with Oregon ties competing at the trials on Friday.

MEN’S SHOT PUT

(Qualifying at noon; final at 6:30 p.m.)

Ryan Crouser (former Barlow High School): Crouser’s first throw in qualifying of 75 feet, 2 1/2 inches ended up the best throw among the field of 24. Joe Kovacs had the next best toss, at 71-6 3/4.

WOMEN’S DISCUS

(Qualifying at 4 p.m.)

Kiana Phelps (UO): Phelps’ best throw of 175 feet, 6 inches was not good enough to qualify for Saturday night’s final.

WOMEN’S 1,500 METERS

(First-round heats at 4:03 p.m.)

Alli Cash (former UO): Cash was a scratch and did not start.

Elise Cranny (Bowerman Track Club): Cranny scratched out of the 1,500.

Ella Donaghu (former Grant High School): Donaghu finished sixth in her heat to advance to Saturday’s semifinals.

Alexa Efraimson (Pete Julian Group, former Camas High School): Efraimson finished eighth in her heat, crossing in 4:16.70, and did not advance to the semifinals.

Nikki HIltz (former UO): Hiltz moved on to the semifinals by finishing second in her heat, in 4:11.42.

Sinclaire Johnson (Bowerman Track Club): Johnson placed fourth in her heat in 4:11.95 to move on to the semifinals.

Taryn Rawlins (former UP, Wilsonville High School): Rawlins finished 10th in her heat and did not qualify for the semifinals.

WOMEN’S 400 METERS

(First-round heats at 4:30 p.m.)

Shae Anderson (former UO): Running in the final heat of the first round, Anderson placed second in 51.32 seconds to move on to the semifinals.

Phyllis Francis (former UO): Francis took fourth in the third heat, crossing in 51.34 seconds. That was good enough to qualify for the semifinals on her time.

MEN’S 400 METERS

(First-round heats at 4:58 p.m.)

Marcus Chambers (former UO): Running in the first heat, Chambers finished sixth in 46.30 and did not qualify for the semifinals.

MEN’S 800 METERS

(First-round heats at 5:26 p.m.)

Donavan Brazier (Pete Julian Group): Brazier won his heat in 1:45.00 to move on to Saturday’s semifinals.

Derek Holdsworth (former Western Oregon): Running in the final heat, Holdsworth crossed in fifth with a time of 1:49.10. He did not qualify for the semifinals.

WOMEN’S 5,000 METERS

(First-round heats at 5:54 p.m.)

Alli Cash (former UO): Cash was a scratch in the 5,000.
