U.S. Olympic track and field trials: Day 7 live updates, results - OregonLive

Hayward Field buzzes back to life on Thursday for Day 7 of the U.S. Olympic track and field trials after two rest days on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Thursday night’s schedule includes two event finals: the women’s shot put at 8 p.m. and the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase at 8:47 p.m.

Thursday at the trials: Schedule, results | 5 things to watch

Raven Saunders posted the best throw in shot put qualifying on Thursday afternoon, with a toss of 62 feet, 10 1/2 inches. The favorites in the women’s steeplechase include 2016 Olympic bronze medalist Emma Coburn and 2016 Olympian Courtney Frerichs of the Portland-based Bowerman Track Club.

Before the two finals, there are plenty of qualifying or first-round events in the field and on the track.

Women’s 200 first-round heats: North Carolina A&T’s Cambrea Sturgis wins the first heat in 22.37 seconds. Teahna Daniels crosses second in 22.54. In the second heat, Anavia wins in 22.37 and Dezerea Bryant is second in 22.71. Quanera Hayes, who won the 400, is in the third heat of the 200, as is Olympian Jenna Prandini. Prandini dominates her heat, winning it in 22.14. Brittany Brown is second in 22.49. Quanera Hayes crosses third in 22.58 and likely will qualify on time. Hayes does qualify on time. Gabby Thomas and Kynnedy Flannel go 1-2 in the fourth heat, with Thomas posting a world-leading and personal-best 21.98. Tamara Clark wins the final heat, and Morolake Akinosun is second. Allyson Felix is a time qualifier to Friday’s semifinals.

Men’s 1,500 first-round heats: The first heat ends in an extremely tight finish. High school phenom Hobbs Kessler wins it in 3 minutes, 45.63 seconds. The next five all finish under 3:46. It’s Bowerman Track Club’s Josh Thompson, former Western Oregon runner David Ribich, OTC Elite’s Vincent Ciattei, Paul Ryan and former UO runner Colby Alexander. In the second heat, Oregon Ducks runner Cole Hocker leads at the bell lap. He wins the second heat in 3:39.72, followed by Waleed Suliman, Craig Engels, Matthew Centrowitz, Oregon’s Jack Yearian and Eric Holt. In the third heat, former Ducks runner Sam Prakel wins it in 3:39.02. Yared Nuguse, Henry Wynne, former Southern Oregon runner Eric Avila, Tripp Hurt and former UO runner Johnny Gregorek also qualify automatically for Friday’s semifinals. Despite finishing ninth, Ben Blankenship of OTC Elite qualifies for the semifinals with his time. Prakel winds up with the fastest time of the day.

Women’s long jump qualifying: Brittney Reese jumps a season-best 22 feet, 6 1/4 inches to take the early lead in the long jump qualifying. That jump holds up as the best one of the day. Quanesha Burks records a leap of 22-4 1/4, and Tiffany Flynn also surpasses 22 feet. NCAA champion Tara Davis is fourth. Former Ducks leaper Jasmine Todd is sixth, at 21-9 1/2. Oregon leapers Alysah Hickey and Rhesa Foster foul on all three of their jumps and do not advance to Saturday’s final.

Women’s pole vault qualifying: It’s early in the competition, but seven vaulters have cleared 14 feet, 5 1/4 inches without a miss thus far. Former Ducks vaulter Kortney Ross has not yet cleared that height. At the conclusion of qualifying, Jenn Suhr, Katie Nageotte and Sandi Morris lead a group of 13 vaulters into the final. The top vaulters cleared 14-9. Ross does not advance to the final. She cleared 14-1 1/4 and finished tied for 15th place.

Women’s shot put qualifying: Raven Saunders has the best toss in qualifying of 62 feet, 10 1/2 inches. Jessica Ramsey throws 61-9, and Maggie Ewen records a toss of 61-7 1/2.

Women’s hammer qualifying: DeAnna Price sets a meet record with a throw of 252 feet, 11 inches. That breaks Amber Campbell’s mark of 242-10 set in 2016. UCLA’s Alyssa Wilson achieves the Olympic standard and finishes second in qualifying with a personal best of 241-11. The women’s hammer final is Saturday.

WOMEN’S POLE VAULT

(Qualifying at 5 p.m.)

• Kortney Ross (former UO): Ross clears 14 feet 1 1/4 inches and finishes tied for 15th place in the competition. She does not advance to Saturday’s final.

WOMEN’S LONG JUMP

(Qualifying at 5:45 p.m.)

Jasmine Todd (former UO): Todd jumps 21 feet, 9 1/2 inches to finish sixth place in qualifying and advance to Saturday’s final.

Alysah Hickey (UO): Hickey fouls on each of her three jumps and she does not advance to the final.

Rhesa Foster (UO): Foster fouls on each of her three jumps and does not move on to the final.

MEN’S 1,500 METERS

(First-round heats at 6:04 p.m.)

Josh Thompson (Bowerman Track Club): Thompson places second in the first heat, in 3:45.67, to advance to the semifinals.

David Ribich (former Western Oregon): Ribich takes third in the first heat, in 3:45.71. He moves on to the semifinals.

Vincent Ciattei (OTC Elite): Ciattei crosses fourth in his heat, in 3:45.77, and he advances to Friday’s semifinals.

Colby Alexander (former UO): Alexander is sixth in his heat in 3:45.87, and that’s good to qualify for the semifinals.

Cole Hocker (UO): Hocker wins the second heat, crossing in 3:39.72, and he is through to the semifinals.

Craig Engels (Pete Julian group): Engels takes third in his heat, finishing in 3:40.03. He moves on to the semifinals.

Matthew Centrowitz (Bowerman Track Club): Centrowitz moves on to the semifinals by finishing fourth in the second heat, in 3:40.09.

Jack Yearian (UO): Running in the second heat, Yearian places fifth and advances to the semifinals. He crosses in 3:40.19.

Sam Prakel (former UO): Prakel posts the fastest time of the day, winning the third heat in 3:39.02. He moves on to Friday’s semifinals.

Eric Avila (former Southern Oregon): Avila moves along to the semifinals by finishing fourth in the third heat, crossing in 3:39.13.

Johnny Gregorek (former UO): Gregorek places sixth in his heat in 3:39.36, but that’s enough to advance automatically to the semifinals.

Ben Blankenship (OTC Elite): Blankenship finishes ninth in the third heat in 3:42.46, but he moves on to the semifinals as a time qualifier.

WOMEN’S 200 METERS

(First-round heats at 6:31 p.m.)

Jenna Prandini (former UO): Prandini wins her heat in a personal-best 22.14 seconds, and she moves through to Friday’s semifinals.
