U.K. Expected To Allow In Vaccinated Travelers Without Quarantine - Forbes

The U.K. government has suggested that it will allow fully vaccinated travelers into the country for non-essential travel, from amber list countries, without the need to quarantine.

Currently, only a handful of countries are on the U.K.’s green travel list, between which people can travel freely for tourist purposes without the need to quarantine.

Most countries are on an amber list, which involves a ten-day quarantine upon arrival in the U.K. with a test before arrival and two tests on day two and eight after arrival. People can ‘test out’ after day five with a negative test. The U.S. is currently on the amber list, as are most EU countries.

The Guardian reported that Matt Hancock, the U.K. Minister for Health at the time (he resigned this weekend) said “thankfully, because of the vaccination programme, we have been able to free up a huge number of the restrictions here at home.” He added that the country was “on track to deliver the step 4, the further openings, on July 19, which is good.”

To some, however, this view looks a little optimistic. The U.K. is currently in a third wave of Covid-19 infections due to the more transmissable Delta variant and recorded 16,135 new daily cases on Wednesday 23 June, the highest since February, and an even higher 18,270 on Friday 25 June.

The Delta variant is also gaining ground across the EU with German Chancellor Angela Merkel stating Wednesday that Europe “is on very thin ice”–scientists predicted that the Delta variant will make up 90% of new cases across the bloc by August. Merkel has called for an EU-wide quarantine on all U.K. arrivals to help combat the virus.

The Guardian reported that she said, “in our country, if you come from Great Britain, you have to go into quarantine–and that’s not the case in every European country, and that’s what I would like to see.”

British members of parliament, however, have expressed concern over the idea of eliminating quarantine for fully vaccinated people, calling the idea “reckless”, as reported in The Telegraph.

Caroline Lucas, vice-chairwoman of the All Party Parliamentary Group, said “the Delta variant first arrived here in the U.K. precisely because of inadequate pre-travel requirements and health checks at U.K. arrival halls, compounded by a lack of support and enforcement of mandatory quarantine.”

Prime Minister Boris Johnson disagrees however, quoted in The Telegraph saying that for those people who have had two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine there is a "real opportunity to open up travel" this summer.

Adblock test (Why?)
