Boston Red Sox allow 8 home runs -- a franchise record -- in 18-4 loss to Blue Jays; Ryan Weber allows 11 run - MassLive.com

For one day only, it looked like the 2020 Red Sox had returned to Fenway Park.

The Red Sox lost, 18-4, in an absolute laugher as the Blue Jays crushed eight home runs -- the most ever by a Red Sox opponent -- and tallied 20 hits on Sunday afternoon. Toronto had three separate four-run innings as six different hitters -- Teoscar Hernández (twice), Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Marcus Semien, Bo Bichette, Cavan Biggio, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Rowdy Tellez -- went deep.

For the second straight start, Sox starter Martín Pérez was unable to pitch into the third inning, as he allowed four runs -- including three homers -- before departing with one out in the second. The Red Sox then called upon reliever Ryan Weber for his season debut and saw him post one of the worst pitching lines imaginable -- 5 ⅔ innings, 13 hits, 11 earned runs, two walks, seven strikeouts and four homers on 95 pitches. The Jays scored in six of their first seven innings, plating four runs in the first, fourth and fifth.

The Red Sox got in on the homer barrage, too, with Xander Bogaerts (solo shot in the second) and Bobby Dalbec (solo shot in the seventh) leaving the yard. With their second straight loss, the Red Sox fell to 39-27 this season.

Gonzalez tosses 1-2-3 eighth; Arroyo pitches ninth

Red Sox utility man Marwin Gonzalez posted the club’s best pitching performance of the day, tossing a 1-2-3 eighth inning as he became Boston’s first position player to pitch this year. Gonzalez has now played seven positions this year (pitcher, first base, second base, third base, shortstop, left field and right field) and is the third player to play at all seven of those spots in a season (Jack Rothrock in 1928, Steve Lyons in 1991).

Gonzalez retired the Blue Jays in order on just 11 pitches in the eighth as h is velocity ranged from 42.6 mph to 89.9 mph.

Second baseman Christian Arroyo made his MLB pitching debut in the ninth, allowing Tellez’s homer to make it 18-4.

Eovaldi looks for split

The Red Sox will look to salvage a split of their wraparound four-game set with the Blue Jays on Monday night as Nathan Eovaldi (7-3, 4.11 ERA) faces off against rookie righty Alek Manoah (1-0, 3.14 ERA). First pitch is at 7:10 p.m. ET.
