Gorillaz are paying tribute to late Afrobeat pioneer Tony Allen with the release of the band's new song "How Far?"
"The track was written and recorded with Skepta in London just before lockdown and is being shared immediately as a tribute to the spirit of a great man, Tony Allen," Gorillaz said in a statement Saturday (May 2).
Allen, a longtime friend and music collaborator of Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn, is also featured on the track. Allen and Albarn were bandmates in Good, the Bad and the Queen. The Gorillaz leader also made an appearance on Allen's 2017 album, The Source.
Allen, a celebrated innovator of the Afrobeat genre, died April 30 in Paris. He was 79.
Albarn paid tribute to Allen on Friday with a short video of the legendary drummer performing on stage during a concert. "There is no end - Tony Allen," he captioned the tweet.
"How Far?" is the latest installment in the Gorillaz’s Song Machine series. In early April, the animated band released the social distancing-themed track "Aries," featuring former New Order's Peter Hook and U.K. pop singer Georgia.
