Test scores for Alabama’s students are down this year, an expected decline from 2019, the last year students took statewide tests.
Under half of second-graders were deemed proficient in English Language Arts on the test, which provides a gauge of who may be in danger of retention should they also test low this school year. Results for the reading portion of the test -- which is the basis for retention -- will be released in October, officials said.

Students took tests this past spring. Statewide results were discussed during the Alabama Board of Education work session Thursday morning. Education officials cautioned that the data had not been verified by districts. District-level data will be made public on Sept. 27, Alabama State Superintendent Eric Mackey said.
Statewide, 93% of eligible students took the test, but participation rates varied widely by district, according to Mackey, ranging from 52% to 100%.
Because the ACAP is a new test, developed by the state, comparing results to those from 2019 or earlier is challenging. This is the first time second graders have taken the standardized test, and Mackey said second-grade scores are only used to measure growth, a required element of federal and state accountability measures.
In most grades, more students reached proficiency in English Language Arts than on the 2019 test. Here’s the breakdown of the percentage of students tested who reached levels 3 and 4, considered proficient on the English Language Arts test:
- 2nd grade ELA: 43% - not tested in 2019
- 3rd grade ELA: 51% in 2021, 48% in 2019
- 4th grade ELA: 52% in 2021, 47% in 2019
- 5th grade ELA: 46% in 2021, 46% in 2019
- 6th grade ELA: 45% in 2021, 46% in 2019
- 7th grade ELA: 43% in 2021, 45% in 2019
- 8th grade ELA: 52% in 2021, 43% in 2019
Math scores, compared to 2019, were down by much larger percentages. The percentage of students scoring at levels 3 and 4 on the math portion of the test are as follows:
- 2nd grade math: 34% in 2021, not tested in 2019
- 3rd grade math: 30% in 2021, 57% in 2019
- 4th grade math: 24% in 2021, 45% in 2019
- 5th grade math: 25% in 2021, 45% in 2019
- 6th grade math: 22% in 2021, 45% in 2019
- 7th grade math: 16% in 2021, 45% in 2019
- 8th grade math 14% in 2021, 42% in 2019
Students in grades four, six and eight were tested in science. Previously, students in fifth and seventh grades were tested in science. The overall proficiency rate for science in those grades in 2019 was 37%, a very slight decrease from 38% in 2018. The 2021 spring test results in science are as follows:
- 4th grade science: 34%
- 6th grade science: 22%
- 8th grade science: 39%
In 2019, the most recent year results were available -- schools took a break after closing in 2020 -- statewide test results, using a previous standardized test, 47% of students were proficient in math and 46% were proficient both years in reading.
