Updates
(8:45 p.m.) In the books. With the state’s inaugural girls state wrestling tournament complete, the year marked a momentous success for advancing the sport in Colorado. Seven wrestlers finished the season undefeated and as state champions, including a pair of freshmen in Pomona’s Persaeus Gomez at 105 and Calhan’s Ciara Monger at 215.
(6:10 p.m.) Chatfield clinches. The Chargers didn’t even need the final round to clinch the inaugural championship with 80 points compared to the 53 points of the next closest team, Pomona. Chatfield has two wrestlers in the finals, sophomore Janessa George (15-3 and in the finals at 105) and junior Savannah Cosme (19-0 in finals at 127). Counting the two championships in the sport’s pilot seasons, Chatfield has now won three straight.
(4:50 p.m.) Score update. Though the semifinal round, Chatfield remains in control of its three-peat destiny with a field-leading 61 points. Pomona (46 points), Calhan (43), Doherty (42.5), Loveland (39) and Olathe (38) are the nearest competitors.
(4:30 p.m.) Mead’s undefeated. Junior Jenna Joseph has been making quick work of the 161-pound bracket so far with two straight pins to improve to 20-0 on the season. She is one of ten undefeated wrestlers left standing heading into Thursday night’s championship round.
(4:05 p.m.) Pomona’s star freshman. Persaeus Gomez improved to 21-0 on the year with her pin of Legacy’s Lola Valdez in the 105 semifinals, a match that took just 86 seconds. Gomez is one of three Panther qualifiers. She will meet Chatfield sophomore Janessa George, who also won her first two matches by pin, in the championship tonight.
(3:40 p.m.) Chatfield leads. After the quarterfinals, Chatfield is in prime position for a three-peat considering the Chargers (a Jeffco co-op team) won the state title the past two seasons when the sport was unsanctioned. All five of the Chatfield qualifiers, including undefeated junior Savannah Cosme at 127, won by pin in the opening round. Chatfield has 35 points, while Pomona (20), Legacy (17) and Doherty (15) round out the top four.
(2:35 p.m.) Small but loud. There’s no more than 150 spectators in the stands at the Southwest Motors Center during the girls’ quarterfinal round, but there’s a decent buzz about the arena thanks to the yelling by coaches, teammates and a fellow loud, select wrestling moms.
(2:33 p.m.) Heavy favorite. Loveland sophomore Morgan Johnson, a nationally accomplished wrestler who won the state’s 100-pound crown in the unsanctioned tournament a year ago, put up a bunch of points early and then pinned Vista Ridge’s Cheyenne Dyess 1:08 into the match. She should cruise to the 100 title tonight — if she doesn’t, it will be a huge upset.
(2:05 p.m.) History underway in Pueblo. The Colorado High School Activities Association’s very first girls wrestling state tournament has begun at the Southwest Motors Events Center. Champions will be crowned in 10 weight classes (100, 105, 111, 118, 127, 136, 147, 161, 185 and 215 pounds) by the time things wrap up tonight.
