Chancellor Angela Merkel is stepping aside after 16 years in power. But her conservative bloc, the , and their candidate Armin Laschet have been trailing in the polls.
The , led by Olaf Scholz, are in pole position to recapture the chancellery after being the junior partner in three of Merkel’s four governments since 2005. Bloomberg will be following the exit polls and results from 6 p.m. GMT+1 (12 p.m. EDT) this Sunday, Sept. 26.
With the vote more fragmented than ever, the election winner will need at least one other party to form a viable coalition. The most likely partners for both the SPD and the CDU/CSU are the —who briefly led in the polls last spring—and the business-friendly . A more remote possibility is a left-leaning coalition of SPD, Greens and the anti-capitalist party. The far-right would be the only party shut out of government.
Coalition talks could stretch well into next year. After the most-recent national election in September 2017, it took about six months for Merkel to form her fourth and final administration.
