With no NFL Scouting Combine this year, the NFL is trying its best to make pro day times and measurements as accurate as possible. If everything goes as planned, the NFL will have personnel on hand at each pro day to assist and accurately record times for the on field drills.
I will try to do a couple of these over the next month as pro day results trickle in, but here are some of the most noteworthy things that have happened already that could potentially have implications on the Steelers and their draft plans.
Rashawn Slater — OT — Northwestern — 6’4” — 304 lbs
Slater is not expected to fall to the Steelers in round one, and his pro day results only confirmed that. He measured in at slightly above 6’4” with 33 inch arms, which was a little better than some expected. He also ran a 4.90 in the 40 and did 33 reps on the bench. He will definitely be a top 15 pick, which means that he is not a realistic target for Pittsburgh in round one.
Wyatt Hubert — DE — Kansas State — 6’2” — 265 lbs
Hubert ran a 7.00 in the 3-cone drill, which is solid for a player at his weight. His solid pro day and senior bowl performances could boost his stock to a late 3rd or early 4th round pick. I see him as more of a 4-3 defensive end, but if the Steelers feel differently, he could be in play if he drops to day three.
Briley Moore — TE — Kansas State — 6’4” — 240 lbs
Moore is on the smaller side for a tight end, but he put himself on the map as a day three sleeper after running a 4.64 in the 40 and doing 26 reps on the bench. Even if the Steelers retain Eric Ebron, they will lack depth at the position. Moore will likely be a 6th or 7th round pick, but he has the athleticism to develop into a solid backup, especially if he can add some weight to his frame.
Jackson Carman — OT — Clemson — 6’5” — 317 lbs
Carman did not participate in any on-field drills, but take note of his weight. These numbers are official. He was listed at about 340 pounds at Clemson, and it was clear that he needed to lose weight if he wanted to remain at tackle. I wish he would have run some of the on-field drills to find out if he is really faster, but this is a big first step for Carman if he wants to remain on the outside.
Travis Etienne — RB — Clemson — 5’10” — 215 lbs
We all expected Etienne to run a good 40 time, and he did not disappoint, running a 4.41 in the better of his two runs. He did 18 reps on the bench, had a 33.5 inch vertical jump, and a 128 inch broad jump. These numbers did not likely do much to his draft stock, so he is likely somewhere in between that 20-35 range, which could make him a reasonable option if the Steelers decide to go the route of a running back in round one.
Amari Rodgers — WR — Clemson — 5’9” — 212 lbs
Rodgers had an impressive Senior Bowl, but his numbers at his pro day may be disappointing in the eyes of fans. According to the Clemson Tigers official website and NFL.com, he ran a 4.51 in the 40, his vertical was only 33 inches, and his broad jump was 121 inches. If his stock was not already as a day three pick, this may have brought his stock down to early day three. It is worth noting, however, that he took snaps as a running back and did well with them. He could still be in play for the Steelers, but I would honestly encourage him to move to running back at the next level. He has the short area burst, vision, and build to be a running back. He will be a solid slot option at receiver, but the upside may be higher if he changes positions.
Cornell Powell — WR — Clemson — 6’0” — 204 lbs
The Athletic claims that Powell ran a 4.47 in the 40, while Clemson’s site is saying that he ran a 4.51. He had a 36.5 inch vertical jump and a 128 inch broad jump as well. His three-cone was also impressive, clocking a 6.93. The Steelers were at Trevor Lawrence’s pro day, and some suspect that it was to scout Powell, as he was one of the receivers catching passes from Lawrence. It is only speculation, but he could be in play for the Steelers on day three.
Joseph Ossai — EDGE — Texas — 6’4” — 256 lbs
Ossai was expected to test well athletically, and he did not disappoint, running a 4.63 in the 40, recording a 41.5 inch vertical jump, and recording a 131 inch broad jump. I have Ossai currently graded as a first round pick, but some mock drafts have him sliding to round two. I think that these results make him a definite top 50 pick and a potential top 25 pick if he does well in virtual interviews.
Samuel Cosmi — OT — Texas — 6’7” — 310 lbs
One of the most gifted offensive linemen in this class, Cosmi put on a show, putting up 36 reps on the bench and running 4.84 in the 40. At the time that this is being written, I have seen no further information on him, but these numbers will likely put him back into the OT4 mix. He seemed to be losing steam, but this may be exactly what the doctor ordered. Once he adds weight to his frame, he could be something special.
A couple other things worth mentioning are that safety Caden Sterns ran a 4.40 in the 40 at his pro day, while Wisconsin-Whitewater lineman Quinn Meinerz ran in the 4.9s. Texas receivers Brennan Eagles and Tarik Black both recorded a 4.93 in the three-cone drill, and defensive lineman Ta’Quan Graham did 32 reps on the bench. Jake Funk, running back from Maryland, ran a 4.43 in the 40 while putting up an impressive 22 bench reps. Another speedy running back is Pooka Williams from Kansas, who ran a 4.38 at his pro day.
A lot has happened in just one week of pro days, and there will be a whole lot more to come in the coming weeks. So be sure to stay tuned to BTSC for all the news you need leading up to free agency and the NFL Draft.
