AEW presented the second night of Fyter Fest this Wednesday on TNT, a show headlined by Jon Moxley defending the IWGP United States Championship against Lance Archer in a Texas Deathmatch.

The wild, chaotic main event capped off a night that continued the rivalry between Inner Circle's Chris Jericho and The Pinnacle's MJF, saw Dr. Britt Baker, D.M.D., defend her AEW women's title and featured both Orange Cassidy and Darby Allin in action.

What went down, who emerged victoriously and what chapters did the company write on the journey to All Out this Labor Day weekend?

Find out now with this recap of the July 21 episode.

In the first of the 5 Labours of Jericho, The Pinnacle's Shawn Spears battled Chris Jericho in a match where only the former could use a steel chair. And he did, targeting the injured elbow of Le Champion to the delight of MJF, who sat in on commentary for the match.

Jericho fought back but ate a superkick. Spears controlled until Jericho sought the Walls of Jericho. Interference from Tully Blanchard ended with Sammy Guevara making the save and chasing the Hall of Famer off. Spears delivered one C4, then tried for another, only for Jericho to escape and deliver the Judas Effect for the win.

After the match, MJF announced that Jericho can not have any further interference from Inner Circle and more importantly, next week's labour will be a No Disqualification Match against...Nick Gage!

    Jericho defeated Spears

    Analysis

If it was that easy to bring Gage in, why not do it when the company was straight-up advertising a death match?

That aside, AEW using Gage is another big get for a company that appears to be loading up on talent at this point. Is he a traditional wrestler? Not even a little. In fact, if the company overuses him, there is a very good likelihood he is exposed.

Gage, though, is incredibly over and an engaging performer. Fans of his work are passionate and loyal. They love him and his appearance on next week's show will attract intrigued fans who want to know what he brings to a No DQ match with Jericho.

The match tonight was perfectly fine, with solid work between two veteran performers, even if there was nothing spectacular about it. MJF was his typically excellent self on commentary, insulting Jericho and selling the idea of another showdown between them.

A solid, newsworthy start to the show.

“Elite Hunter” Frankie Kazarian sat aside mid-match run-ins and sneak attacks Wednesday night to battle Impact Wrestling tag team champion Doc Gallows, accompanied by fellow Good Brother “Machine Gun” Karl Anderson, in singles competition.

The big man dominated the action through the commercial break but Kazarian mounted a comeback. A late distraction by Anderson allowed Gallows to recover and deliver a sit-out chokebomb for the pinfall victory.

After the match, Don Callis and Kenny Omega made their way to the ring. They cut promos making fun of the fallen Elite Hunter before Hangman Page made his way to the squared circle, greeted by a huge pop from the Texas fans.

Page handed Callis his beer and teed off on The Good Brothers and Omega. When the numbers disadvantage caught up to him, The Dark Order made the save. Hangman leveled Anderson with a Buckshot Lariat and stood tall.

    Analysis

Crowd energy was nonexistent for this one, perhaps due to the red-hot angle to start the show or maybe, because the fans in attendance simply were not as invested in the performers as they are others in AEW. Whatever the case may be, this lacked a spark that left a lot to be determined.

Worst of all, it essentially castrated Kazarian of any momentum he had in his role as the dark avenging Elite Hunter. Sure, Anderson distracted him, but guys looking to avenge wrongs don’t just get beaten in what amounts to a meaningless TV match.

It’s disappointing because that character had plenty of legs left in it.

Page is super over and absolutely should dethrone Omega as soon as All Out and more importantly, The Dark Order is benefitting by proxy. Everything about that group and their selection for this rivalry has been superbly executed.

One week after a punishing Coffin Match, Darby Allin battled young Wheeler Yuta in singles competition.

The back and forth match came to a standstill late as Orange Cassidy and Sting, accompanying their respective associates, teed off on each other with Freshly Squeezed's trademark "offense."

As the focus returned to the match at hand, Allin delivered the Coffin Drop to Yuta for the win.

    Allin defeated Yuta

    Analysis

The match was an above-average that highlighted Allin while giving Yuta a platform for the second week to showcase his skills. Both men looked great and Yuta again impressed against a star considered by many to be the future of the company.

He may have earned himself a contract over these two weeks.

Dave Meltzer should empty the star bank, though. Give that showdown between Cassidy and Sting eleventy billion stars because it was ample amounts of awesome.

Two weeks ago, Nyla Rose drove Dr. Britt Baker DMD through a table at ringside. Wednesday, she attempted to end her reign as AEW women’s champion before it ever really got started in a big, blockbuster title clash.

She was well on her way to doing so early, dominating the good doctor with her strength and size advantage. Anytime Baker fought back, she cut her off, driving her back to the mat. Rose added a knee from the top rope, driving it into the back and neck of Baker as she was draped on the top rope.

Baker recovered and executed consecutive stomps to the back of the head, but could not keep her challenger down. Both champ and challenger tried to use a page out of the late Eddie Guerrero’s playboy by feigning cheating before Rose delivered a devastating Beast Bomb. Baker kicked out, escaped another and applied the Lockjaw for the successful title defense.

    Result

Baker defeated Rose to retain her title

    Grade

    C-

    Analysis

Both Baker and Rose are above-average wrestlers with previous performers to prove it, but this was not a particularly great match. Spots were disjointed more than they have been in the past and the heel vs. heel dynamic didn’t exactly click.

Baker winning was the right call, obviously, and Rose tapping only puts her over stronger as a worthy champion.

What the women’s division doesn’t need anytime soon is another match between these two, Riho or Hikaru Shida. Those women have been pillars of the AEW women’s division and deserve the screen time and opportunity. What needs to happen now, though, is for Baker to move on to fresh competition so that the division can move forward and evolve.

Otherwise, it will remain stagnant. There is too much talent involved for that to be the case.

Keep Rose, Riho and Shida involved, but away from the title picture. At least for now.

Tony Schiavone interviewed Andrade El Idolo, who wasted little time introducing his new executive consultant, Chavo Guerrero.

Before the pairing could say anything of note, Death Triangle's Pac, Rey Fenix and Penta El Zero M interrupted. Pac made it abundantly clear that the trio runs from no one. Andrade and Guerrero suggested they need to listen to El Idolo if they want to wear gold.

The two sides talked trash in Spanish before Death Triangle ran El Idolo off.

    Grade

    C+

    Analysis

The introduction of Guerrero was great a Chavo has performed at the highest level and has earned the opportunity to be featured in a major wrestling promotion in some form or fashion. He is a wealth of knowledge and should benefit AEW both in front of and behind the scenes.

El Idolo needs a mouthpiece and Vickie Guerrero was not a good fit by any means. Chavo is and can benefit the former NXT champion exponentially as he seeks to find his footing in this new company.

The matches between El Idolo and the members of Death Triangle will be awesome, even if the promos need a little work.

After enduring a cheap shot at the hands of The Blade earlier in the show, Orange Cassidy came from out of nowhere to attack his opponent. The Blade feigned a knee injury, complete with The Bunny checking on him. The heel attacked Cassidy, cheapshotting him for the second time.

Blade delivered a gut wrench suplex on the top turnbuckle, sending Cassidy crashing to the arena floor as the show headed to break. As Cassidy mounted his comeback, Blade pulled Kris Statlander (who had come to his friend’s aid) in front of him, causing Freshly Squeezed to crash into her at ringside.

Cassidy survived a corkscrew tombstone and delivered Beach Break. Blade attempted to use the same brass knuckles from earlier in the show but Cassidy caught him with the Orange Punch for the hard-fought, come-from-behind win. He added a knuckles-assisted Orange Punch for good measure.

Backstage, Chris Jericho revealed to Alex Marvez that if MJF is bringing Nick Gage, he’s reintroducing his Painmaker persona.

    Result

    Cassidy defeated Blade

    Grade

    C+

    Analysis

This probably went on a bit longer than it needed to but it was a fun, if inconsequential, match.

Cassidy is a great, resilient babyface that fans care about. You can put him in the ring with any heel and the match will still have tons of heat because of the connection he has formed with the audience. Blade is a solid, probably underrated wrestler who can more than hold his own in a big-match situation, something we’ve seen in his work in the tag team division with The Butcher.

Where both men go from here remains to be seen, but Cassidy figures to remain a centerpiece of AEW’s youth movement.

Chaos reigned supreme in the main event of AEW Dynamite, Fyter Fest Night Two as IWGP United States champion Jon Moxley defended against “Murderhawk Madman” Lance Archer. The hometown hero Archer exploded out of the gate but Moxley met his ferocity. The action spilled into the crowd, then back to the ring, where Moxley bloodied his challenger and seized control of the bout.

Moxley Pillman-ized Archer’s leg in a chair but the challenger answered with a defiant right hand that sent a trash can lid back into the champion’s face. The action intensified, each throwing everything they could at the other in an attempt to earn the victory, including a low blow from Mox.

Archer responded with a chokeslam onto the edges of two chairs that drew chants of “holy s***” and “AE-Dub!” Moxley caught a charging Archer with a lariat, then the Paradigm Shift. Archer shook it off, to which Mox responded by repeatedly using a fork on his forehead.

Mox retrieved a board of barbed wire and placed it on two tables. Archer countered a Paradigm Shift and delivered a chokeslam onto the board, through the tables, and earned the victory and title via refere’s 10-count.

New Japan Pro-Wrestling and Bullet Club’s Hikuleo confronted Archer ahead of their match next week.

    Result

Archer defeated Moxley to win the title

    Grade

    A

    Analysis

This was physical, violent and delivered on the gimmick. Moxley and Archer upped their intensity (and violence level) throughout, culminating in the high spot that ended the former’s title reign and gave Archer the defining win he has been chasing since arriving in AEW.

There will be some that will consider the finish a copout but Moxley is protected by way of getting caught up in the barbed wire and unable to return to the ring, while Archer looks like a total badass for absorbing everything the former world champion threw at him and still emerge with the title.

This was a great brawl of a main event, a hardcore Texas fight that the fans bought into from the start. On a night that was always fun but more up-and-down from a quality standpoint, this was the perfect exclamation point that sent fans home happy and set the stage for Archer-Hikuleo next week.
