Syracuse, N.Y. -- Jim Boeheim chided Republican lawmakers Saturday for attempting to overturn the results of the presidential election.
Boeheim, speaking after the Orange crushed Boston College on the road Saturday, revealed his dismay with Republicans for the variety of ways in which they’ve tried to contest the 2020 race for president. Joe Biden is the president-elect, though some Republican factions have not accepted the results. Republicans in Congress numbering 126 signed their names to a Texas lawsuit challenging the presidential election results in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin and Georgia.
“We’ve got people that are supposed to be running the country that are thinking we didn’t have a fair election. It’s the craziest thing I ever heard,” Boeheim told reporters in his post-game Zoom. “I’m kinda Republican -- in the middle someplace -- I would do everything I could if I had PAC (Political Action Committee) money, I’d try to get every one of the Republicans that are backing this nonsense, I’d try to get every one of them thrown out of office. This is just nonsense. I can’t believe that the highest level of our government has got people doing this.”
Boeheim talked about Biden’s 80 million popular votes in a year of record voter turnout. President Donald Trump garnered more than 70 million votes.
“That’s good,” Boeheim said of Trump’s numbers. “(But) we lost a game 82-81 once. I’m not going to the referees and say, ‘You missed this call, I got it right here on tape, so we won. You missed these two calls (or) we would have won the game.’ Is that how we’re going in this country?”
Boeheim also disputed Trump’s popularity. Those 70-plus million votes, Boeheim suggested, do not represent Trump’s base in the United States.
“He’s got a few (fans). Ten million, whatever,” Boeheim said. “But the other 60 million voted because they don’t like Democrats. They’re Republicans. ... About 60 million Republicans will never vote for a Democrat. You can have Attila the Hun. You can have anybody running. If he’s a Republican, they’re going to pull the Republican line. Period. That’s what they’re gonna do.
“This election is over. It’s been over. Let’s try to get moving here. We can’t get a relief package put out. But we can file lawsuits against the election. Makes no sense.”
