In September, Dickinson Public Schools surveyed 1,418 people, including 309 staff members and 1,105 parents and four community members about its hybrid learning program.

The survey results revealed that the majority of parents and staff were at least okay with the hybrid learning program.

When asked how hybrid learning was going, over 42% of parents/community members said it was going "good" or "very good," and just over 20% of them responded "poor" or "very poor." The largest percentage of parents and staff answered "okay" -- 37% and 43%, respectively.

In an effort to decrease the amount of students in contact with one another during the COVID-19 pandemic, the district has opted to have students attend class in person every other day. On those days they aren't physically in class, they are to attend remotely. Students will alternate between remote learning and classroom learning every other Friday.

The survey indicated that 61% of parents approved of the decision to rotate Fridays, while teachers were mostly split on the decision.

Communication, which had been a concern with the district abruptly transitioned to remote learning last spring, appears to be good this fall.

The vast majority of respondents (78%) reported that communication between parents and their child's teachers were meeting their needs.

The majority of staff (64%) reported that communication from school leadership is adequate, but nearly as many (63%) think too much is expected of them to make hybrid learning work.

Expectations seem to be clearer as well, with nearly 68% of parents reporting that expectations for distance learning days were clear.

Comments in the survey revealed that both teachers and parents feel that don't have enough time to best fulfill their students' educational needs.

"Teachers feel they need the extra day to prepare lessons and/or focus on those students having difficulty; parents feel they don’t have the time and/or skill to help their child(ren) at home so want them in class as much as possible," the report reads.

Most parents (61%) answered that course work expectations for their child were "about right."

The survey was emailed via link to parents and staff Sept. 18 and was open for responses through Sept. 24.
