Dauphin County has released a mid-count update of its mail-in ballot canvassing, and these first results in the Democratic primary for Pennsylvania’s 10th Congressional District show state Auditor General Eugene DePasquale substantially maintaining his Election Day lead over Hershey attorney and author Tom Brier.

At the end of Thursday’s counting, which included mail-in tallies from 42 of Dauphin’s 159 precincts, DePasquale shows 25,864 votes district-wide, to Brier’s 16,499.

Brier continued to beat DePasquale in Dauphin County. In the mail-in count released today, Brier posted 2,316 votes to DePasquale’s 1,986.

But the good news for DePasquale is that, so far, he is winning a higher share of the mail-in ballots in Dauphin (46.2 percent) than he scored at the polls on Tuesday throughout the county, 33.8 percent. Brier’s hopes for overtaking DePasquale hinged in part on maintaining the 2-1 margin he had rolled up in Dauphin County in the live voting.

If that trend holds up through the rest of the count, Brier’s path to an upset victory will narrow considerably.

DePasquale built his big election day lead in his home base of York County, which he used to represent in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. Preliminary vote totals there - both from the polls and the mail-in voting - showed DePasquale with 17,316 votes in York, and Brier posting just 4,024.

Mail-in ballots are also being tabulated this week in Cumberland County, where the two candidates fought to a near draw on Tuesday. Election officials there have decided to release their vote count when they have finished the entire tabulation.

In all, there were nearly 40,000 ballots outstanding in Dauphin and Cumberland counties Tuesday night. Thursday morning’s report from Dauphin County accounted for 4,518 of them, so there’s still a long way to go.

The winner of the Democratic primary will be running against incumbent U.S. Rep. Scott Perry, R-York County, in the general election. Perry, who is seeking a fifth term in Congress, was unopposed in the Republican primary.
