Boulder County Jail awaiting test results for female inmates after deputy tests positive for COVID-19 - The Daily Camera

The Boulder County Jail has quarantined about 17 female inmates and is awaiting test results after a deputy tested positive for COVID-19.

Cmdr. Jeff Goetz said the female deputy came to work about two weeks ago and went home when she started to feel under the weather. One of her family members then tested positive for the coronavirus, and after getting tested the deputy found out she had the illness as well.

Officials did not name the deputy because health privacy laws prohibit them from doing so.

Goetz said the deputy did not return to the jail after leaving on the day she first went home and has remained home following the positive test.

The deputy had been working in the two women’s modules at the jail, so the inmates in those modules were all transferred to another module to be isolated from the rest of the jail population and incoming female inmates.

“We are quarantining them in case they were exposed, so that they would be in the safest place possible,” Goetz said.

All of the possibly exposed inmates were tested, and Goetz said he expects results back sometime this week.

“We’re kind of in this waiting game until the tests come back,” Goetz said.

Goetz said a week into the quarantine, none of the inmates have shown any symptoms of the coronavirus. But regardless of the test results, Goetz said those inmates will be kept in quarantine for another week as a precaution.

“That way, even if it came back positive, they are no longer contagious,” Goetz said.

Goetz said the jail is currently at about 200 inmates following drastic efforts by the jail and attorneys to reduce inmate population.

So far, the jail’s only coronavirus case was an inmate who had tested positive at a shelter in Denver in April. After failing to inform the Boulder County Jail of his positive test during screening, he was booked into the Boulder jail and tested positive again in May.

But Goetz said by that point the inmate was no longer contagious and did not spread the virus.

“We’ve been working with public health since the beginning to make sure we are all on the same page,” Goetz said.
