Honor A.P. secured a spot in the Kentucky Derby on Saturday with a huge come-from-behind win in the Santa Anita Derby. The victory was propelled by a massive push on the final turn of the race, where he practically left his competition behind him in the dust.
For the horse and his jockey, Mike Smith, this victory was a redemption of sorts. Honor A.P. had raced one of his Santa Anita competitors before, Authentic, and had come 2 ¼ lengths behind him in the March 7 San Felipe Stakes. This time, it was Authentic who finished behind the John Shirreffs-trained colt.

The colt's lineage was brought up often before, after and even during the race itself, and with good reason. He's a son of Honor Code from the A.P. Indy sire line and out of a dam (mother) who was a Grade 1 winner at 1 1/8 miles, meaning that his genes indicate that he should love the long races like the one at Santa Anita today.
