Larimer County has asked the state for a waiver of some safer-at-home restrictions to allow more businesses to slowly reopen.
The Larimer County Department of Health and Environment announced Monday that the official variance request had been submitted to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment — a move that officials endorsed during a public county commissioners’ meeting last Tuesday.
“Larimer County residents have done a great job flattening the curve,” according to a press release from the health department. “Face coverings, social distancing, handwashing and frequent cleaning all help slow the spread of the virus in the community. Those precautions must continue in order to allow Larimer County to move forward with reopening businesses as safer at home restrictions are lifted.”
State health department officials will review the request and decide whether to approve the entire variance or portions of it, allowing the county to begin working with more businesses to safely open.
The county was able to apply by demonstrating that it had decreasing numbers of serious cases, increased testing and enough beds, ventilators and protective equipment for local hospitals to handle the number of cases.
The county also had to show it had created local containment measures and a suppression plan, which was approved by the commissioners, the Larimer County Board of Health and all hospitals within Larimer County.
The county will continue to monitor the situation to make sure cases are not surging to a point that strains the local hospital system.
