Michigan nursing homes in all counties can allow indoor visitors and are encouraged to resume activities like communal dining and group activities under an upcoming epidemic order from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
“As we continue our vaccine rollout and make steady progress against the virus, we are taking additional incremental steps to re-engage to ensure we are protecting our families and frontline workers and saving lives,” Whitmer said in a statement.
The previous order from MDHHS on nursing homes and long-term care facilities allowed visitation in areas of the state deemed to be at risk levels A-D on the MI Safe Start map.
Fifteen Michigan counties -- Calhoun, Cheboygan, Eaton, Emmet, Gogebic, Hillsdale, Houghton, Huron, Keewanaw, Lapeer, Leelanau, Lenawee, Missaukee, Sanilac, St. Joseph -- are at risk level E, meaning only outdoor nursing home visits could take place prior to this change.
The new order, expected to be announced at a 2 p.m. press conference Whitmer is holding Tuesday afternoon, goes into effect immediately.
Visitors will need to wear masks, and in general, maintain six feet of separation from nursing home residents. A requirement that no case can have originated in the facility in the past 14 days remains in place, and visitors are required to take rapid antigen tests for COVID-19.
All staff at nursing homes have been offered both doses of the vaccine, according to the state. However, many nursing home staff and residents have declined the vaccine.
