Rutgers fans can head back to the banks.
SHI Stadium in Piscataway will be at full capacity for football games this fall, the university announced Wednesday -- almost a month after Gov. Phil Murphy lifted most statewide coronavirus restrictions and signed off on the Giants and Jets packing MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford.
Tailgating and the Scarlet Walk will also be permitted, and the marching band and cheerleaders will be in the stadium during games.
The Scarlet Knights will kick off the 2021 season against Temple on Thursday, Sept. 2. It will be the football program’s first home event at its 52,454-seat stadium without attendance restrictions in almost two years, dating back to the 2019 home finale in late November of that year -- a 27-0 loss to Michigan State that preceded the wildest week in program history before Greg Schiano’s return as head coach.
Rutgers had a smattering of athlete and coach guests at its five home games last fall based on New Jersey’s crowd size limits -- up to 500 people early in the season and 150 at the end.
Rutgers began allowing fans at sporting events in March after the Big Ten lifted its moratorium on general attendance for on-campus events. But the school only allowed 5,000 season ticket holders to attend the spring football game in late May, even though state guidelines allowed for a larger crowd. That decision drew criticism, as did university president Jonathan Holloway sticking with a prior decision to conduct all commencement ceremonies virtually while other institutions state- and nationwide held in-person graduations.
