Sports are beginning to return to UCLA. Slowly.

The UCLA athletic department announced on Wednesday that football student-athletes can begin to return to campus on Monday. Local athletes from men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s water polo and cross country will also be allowed back on campus starting next week.

UCLA is describing this as Phase One of their plan to reopen campus. This stage will “consist of COVID-19 and antibody testing and comprehensive screening of both physical and mental well-being,” per the release. Phase Two will consist of beginning athletic activities again.

“To allow student-athletes to make an informed decision on whether to return, team-by-team communication and detailed education on the plan will take place this week for all student-athletes who are eligible to return on Monday, along with their families,” the announcement reads.

Like other schools around the country, UCLA shut down its athletic department in March as the spread of COVID-19 canceled remaining winter and spring athletic seasons.

Pac-12 schools were allowed to start bring back student-athletes this week, but UCLA had held off on opening its campus again as it formulated a plan for doing so.
