Former U.S. Rep. Claudia Tenney will get her rematch with U.S. Rep. Anthony Brindisi, D-Utica, this November.
Tenney declared victory in the Republican primary for New York’s 22nd Congressional District late Tuesday night and her opponent, Broome County educator George Phillips, conceded Wednesday morning.
“I will continue our great work in Congress to protect our seniors, honor our veterans, save our family farms, and help our small businesses,” Tenney said in a statement.
“It is important now more than ever to rebuild the great economy that we helped to grow that was knocked down as a result of the COVID-19 crisis.”
While absentee ballots won’t be counted until at least July 1, Tenney had a commanding lead with most election districts reporting. Tenney had 15,486 votes, outpacing Phillips’s 6,759, for a 38 percentage-point lead on election night.
Broome County issued 21,929 absentee ballots and 13,475 were received by the Board of Elections as of Wednesday afternoon. Any ballot postmarked June 23 and received by June 30 will be counted. The Board of Elections will double-check to make sure that someone who voted in person did not also submit an absentee ballot.
Phillips did well on his home turf, edging Tenney in part of Broome County by a couple hundred votes. He also kept things close in nearby Tioga County, where he lost by only 21 votes.
But in a year unlike any other, election results won't be official for a while. By law, counting of absentee ballots does not begin until one week after the election.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, residents could vote by absentee ballot in addition to taking advantage of early voting locations, or the traditional in-person voting Tuesday.
Unofficial results show incumbent Republican Christopher S. Friend leading RC Ike, 3,810 votes to 1,457 for New York's 124th Assembly seat.
The 124th includes all of Tioga County, and parts of Brome and Chemung, including Elmira and Horseheads.
