2020 Salt Lake City Supercross Rnd 13 Results: Eli Tomac scored one of the most important wins of his career after a race-long battle with defending champ Cooper Webb in round 13 of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, Utah, June 7.
Despite knowing his chief rival for the 450SX championship was struggling well down the field, Tomac (Monster Energy Kawasaki) was still willing to risk a potential crash or mishap to get the win. He and Webb (Red Bull KTM) traded the lead position a number of times on the muddy, slick, and rutted track—but perhaps worst of all was the seemingly endless stream of lappers they had to fight through—in what was one of the most exciting 450SX main events of the season. Just when it seemed as though Webb had finally gotten the upper hand and was going to chalk up his second win in a row, Tomac came fighting back and passed the KTM rider on the penultimate lap to get the win in front of, unfortunately, zero spectators. What a shame!
“Halfway I was feeling good and thought there was no reason to take it down a level,” Tomac said. “It was a good race…the lappers were unbelievable.”
After making progress last Wednesday, gaining three points on Tomac in the championship, Webb gave those points right back after putting up a valiant fight.
“[It] sucks that I got second. It was a battle,” Webb said. “We were pushing hard…[and the] lappers were gnarly. It was a fun race even if I got beat.”
As nice as it was to get the win, it was even nicer for Tomac and his chances of winning his first 450SX Supercross championship. Tomac came into the race with a modest 13-point lead in the championship over Ken Roczen (Honda HRC), who revealed between this race and the last one (Wednesday) that he’s been dealing with a respiratory condition (see below, Qualifying) that has been making it difficult for him to ride hard the entire race distance (and stadium’s 4000-plus-foot elevation doesn’t help). Roczen ran as high as fourth before dropping off the pace and sinking deeper into the field. He actually got lapped by Tomac twice and was credited with 10th place. He now trails Tomac by 25 points (which is one full race) with four rounds to go. And to add insult to injury, he is now in danger of losing second place to Webb, who’s gone 1-2 in the last two races versus Roczen’s 5-10. Roczen is just six points ahead of Webb now.
Jason Anderson (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna) finished on the podium for the fourth time this season and, earlier in the day, he captured his first heat-race victory since his championship-winning season in 2018. In the main, he had to fight his way past his teammate, Zach Osborne, again before taking the checkered flag in third, some 40 seconds behind the two riders, Tomac and Webb, ahead of him.
Osborne finished fourth, while Malcolm Stewart (Smarttop/Bullfrog Spas/Motoconcepts Honda) rounded out the top five a lap down.
Justin Brayton (Honda HRC), Martin Davalos (Team Tedder/Monster Energy), Justin Barcia (Monster Energy Yamaha), and Roczen completed the top 10.
The 250SX East main event was a wide-open affair at the finish of the race, but it certainly didn’t start that way. There was plenty of drama right off the bat.
First off, the rain came as the riders started lining up, and there was plenty of action on the first lap, with Chase Sexton (Geico Honda) and Shane McElrath (Monster Energy/Star Racing Yamaha), who were tied for the championship lead going into the race, coming out of the first turn 1-2. But McElrath dove inside of Sexton to take the lead out of the turn, resulting in Sexton running off the track. He rejoined the pack inside the top six but went down moments later when he tangled with another rider jumping into a turn. Sexton’s title hopes seemed to take a big hit as he was buried deep in the pack. But Sexton caught a huge break when the red came out forcing a re-start. Garrett Marchbanks had crashed and needed assistance getting off the track, which brought out the red flag.
The results were pretty much the same coming out of the first turn on the re-start, with McElrath in the lead and Sexton second. This time, Sexton kept it on two wheels, as he chased McElrath, who was setting the pace up front.
McElrath was unable to shake Sexton but still seemed in control of the race until he came upon a lapped rider and tried to pass him on the inside, but he ended up bumping into him, putting the Yamaha rider to the ground.
Sexton took full advantage of McElrath’s mistake and his second break of the race and rode off with the win.
McElrath got up in second place but approximately 20 seconds in back of the new leader. McElrath managed to chew into Sexton’s lead, especially the last few laps when Sexton started riding conservatively. Officially, Sexton took the checkered flag 8.023 seconds ahead of McElrath.
Sexton, once again, is in sole position of the championship lead but by only three points with two to go. Sexton can now enjoy being back out in front with a two-week break in the season. The 250SX West riders start back up at the next round, this coming Wednesday.
Colt Nichols joined his teammate McElrath on the podium, while Pierce Brown (TLD/Red Bull KTM) and Kyle Peters (Phoenix Racing Honda) rounded out the top five. CN

2020 Salt Lake City Supercross Rnd 12 Qualifying
2020 Salt Lake City Supercross Rnd 13 Results: It’s a mudder in Utah. The forecast for rain proved to be accurate as rain fell during practice/qualifying for today’s round 13 of the 2020 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship. The result? An extremely wet and muddy racecourse that’s taking approximately one minute for the riders to circulate. Compare that to the 40-second lap times last week and the 45-second lap times last Wednesday and you get an idea just how much more difficult it is for the racers to complete just one lap in the slop. Luckily, the sun is poking through the clouds as the main race program is getting close.
The wet conditions forced the AMA to modify the afternoon schedule to just one qualifying segment instead of the usual two. After all was said and done, Eli Tomac and Chase Sexton adapted to the adverse conditions best, with Tomac topping the 450SX class and Sexton the 250SX East class.
Just six riders managed to squeak inside the one-minute mark: Tomac (57.629), Dean Wilson (58.076), Jason Anderson (58.192), Cooper Webb (58.531), Zach Osborne (59.678) and Malcolm Stewart (59.988). If you’re wondering where Ken Roczen is, he is back in eighth with a 1:00.855. Other notables who are struggling in the mud include Blake Baggett (11th), Justin Brayton (12th), and Justin Barcia (18th).
Chad Reed is riding well and cracked the top 10, and Aaron Plessinger, who is known for his excellent mud-riding skills, is ninth quickest.
In the 250SX East division, points leader Shane McElrath appeared to have first gate pick going into the afternoon heat races, but rival Chase Sexton busted out a hot lap toward the end, nipping McElrath by .05 seconds.
Colt Nichols, another rider who has good history riding in the mud, is third but a full second off Sexton and McElrath’s pace. Garrett Marchbanks is fourth, followed by KTM rider Dustin Winter (EBR Performance/Altus Motorsports KTM), of Clearwater, Kansas.
A few developments happened between Wednesday’s race and this one. Adam Cianciarulo (Monster Energy Kawasaki) announced yesterday that his injuries from last Sunday’s race (round 11) are more serious than first thought and is not riding. In fact, he will sit out the rest of the series.
Further evaluation revealed that Cianciarulo has four acute fractures to the transverse processes (the small “finger looking” parts the vertebrae) in his lower back.
“This is not the news I was expecting to be sharing today, but after speaking to additional specialists and the team, it is in my best interest that I sit out the remainder of the supercross season,” Cianciarulo said, Saturday, June 6. “This is a tough pill to swallow as I was really excited to get back to racing here in Salt Lake City, but I have to be smart with what my body is telling me. For now, I will focus on my recovery and do everything in my power to make sure I am ready to go in July for the start of the AMA Pro Motocross Championship.”
Roczen revealed via a lengthy Instagram post that he’s been struggling with a respiratory condition, which might explain his performance last Wednesday when he faded noticeably early in the race. “I’ve been having breathing issues for a few months now,” he said. “I got really sick in November/December that attacked the respiratory side of my body really bad. It has been going on for a long time and I am not able to get rid of it. I have developed a mild asthma that I was unaware of before, but I am not sure if that is the actual issue to be honest.
“I am always going out to do my best and push my body as hard as I can,” Roczen added. “Obviously I had to let go after just about eight minutes into the main, which is obviously not normal. I know that this looks bad, but unfortunately, it is what it is and I am not giving up.”
JGRMX/Yoshimura Suzuki’s Broc Tickle is back in action after breaking a bone in his hand during practice at last Sunday’s race. He qualified 16th today.
The big news in the 250SX East class is that Jeremy Martin is not racing and will sit out the rest of the season. The Geico Honda rider is on the verge of pointing out of the class, and to preserve is options for next year, he and the team made the decision to start focusing on the outdoors.
