Less than a week after Florida fired defensive coordinator Todd Grantham, its defense went from bad to flat-out embarrassing on Saturday as the Gators trailed 42-35 against FCS Samford at halftime. The Bulldogs, who entered with a 4-5 record, compete in the Southern Conference. In its last game against an FBS team back in 2019, Samford lost 52-0 to Auburn.
Samford's 42 points in the first half were the most ever allowed in a single half by Florida, beating the previous mark of 38 set by Florida State against the Gators in 1992.
UF entered ranked 43rd nationally in total defense but has struggled mightily on that side of the ball in three consecutive losses. LSU racked up 49 points in a win over the Gators on Oct. 16, Georgia scored 34 on Oct. 30 and lowly South Carolina scored 40 in a blowout upset win over the Gators last week.
The loss to the Gamecocks marked Grantham's final game as the defensive coordinator after he began the role alongside embattled coach Dan Mullen in 2018. Linebackers coach Christian Robinson is serving as the play-caller on defense in Grantham's place. Samford racked up 358 total yards in the first half against Florida.
The Bulldogs were the third FCS team in the past seven seasons to score 35+ points in the first half against a Power Five team. Southern Illinois scored 38 against Ole Miss in the first half of a 2018 game, and Missouri State scored 35 against Missouri in the first half of a 2017 game.
The 42 points that Florida has given up already are the most the program has ever allowed to a non-conference, non-Power Five opponent, and it's all come inside of 30 minutes in The Swamp.
