WWE SmackDown returned to FS1 Friday with a show that promised the latest in the rivalry between Sasha Banks and Charlotte Flair over the blue brand women's title and the next challenger to Roman Reigns' Universal Championship.
Elsewhere on the show, intercontinental champion Shinsuke Nakamura and Rick Boogs battled Madcap Moss and Happy Corbin in a timely Trick or Street Fight.

SmackDown women's champion Charlotte Flair kicked off the evening's broadcast with a promo in which she brought up last week's "drama" before turning her attention to Sasha Banks. The Boss interrupted the proceedings before Shotzi made her presence felt, challenging The Queen to a match against an opponent she has yet to defeat.
Following a short commercial break, the Ballsy Badass of WWE squared off with the measuring stick in the women's division, looking to boost her stock by scoring a massive upset. After a brief exchange, Flair tripped Shotzi off, dropping her back- and neck-first on the top rope.
The babyface found herself on the defensive, forced to thwart the pinpoint offense of her opponent through a second timeout.
Back from the break, Shotzi scaled the ropes and caught Flair with a top-rope hurricanrana for a close two-count. She delivered a double chicken wing suplex for another near-fall but was caught charging into the ropes. A moonsault from Flair missed, but a follow-up landed for a two-count. The Queen delivered Natural Selection to score the hard-fought victory.
After the match, a frustrated Shotzi attacked Banks, unloading on the Boss and leaving her lying in the corner of the ring.

Analysis
The second episode of the new era of SmackDown has brought with it a heel turn for Shotzi that capped off a breakthrough performance. Her ring work was strong as she hung with the top star in women's wrestling. Her promo before that was one of her best to date, and the intensity displayed during the heel turn, in which she completely womanhandled Banks, was excellent.
Shotzi was given a prime opportunity to make herself a star, and she did, having the fans completely behind her during the match with Flair, only to turn her back on those supporters and Banks herself.
This was a segment where a new star shined and, more importantly, something actually happened rather than happening for the sake of happening. Kudos to the creative team for this entire thing, which suddenly injected life into the blue brand's women's division and proved it doesn't necessarily have to revolve around Banks and Flair all the time.

Back from the break, an angry and vengeful Adam Pearce revealed that, in addition to his indefinite suspension, he is fining Brock Lesnar $1 million for his actions toward the WWE official last week on SmackDown. Kayla Braxton caught up with Paul Heyman to ask how Brock might respond to that, to which Heyman got animated before calming down and demanding the interviewer leave him alone.
Back in the arena, Drew McIntyre made his way to the ring for a second, consecutive open challenge. "Who has got the testicular fortitude to step up and challenge the SmackDown warrior right here, right now?"
Mustafa Ali answered, claiming he has more athletic talent in his pinky than McIntyre's entire body.
McIntyre tossed his opponent around the ring before both men missed potential match-ending finishers. The former WWE champion countered a DDT attempt and applied the kimura for a submission victory.
After the match, an infuriated Ali cut a promo blatantly accusing fans of rooting against him because of his name. He threw down the mic to a chorus of boos.

Analysis
An actual match between McIntyre and Ali would have been a banger, but this was what it set out to be: a showcase for McIntyre, who figures to be one of the top contenders to the Universal Championship held by Roman Reigns.
The biggest takeaway, though, was the twist at the end in which Ali hurled a weighty accusation at the WWE Universe. There is a real, valid argument to be made that Ali doesn't need to go that route to get over; that his talent and promo skills would do that for him if actually utilized in a meaningful manner. Time will tell if this was the right call or if it was as unnecessary as it appears on the surface.

New King of the Ring Xavier Woods joined best friend and tag team partner Kofi Kingston in the ring for a special Knighting Ceremony. After declaring Kingston worthy of the honor and naming him "The Hand of the King," The Usos interrupted and came face-to-face with their longtime rivals.
The back-and-forth segment concluded with Woods calling for a trial by combat for later in the night.

Analysis
New Day vs. The Usos is a feud that will always deliver, even in a silly, seemingly useless segment like this.
The promo gave Woods an opportunity to showcase what his personality will be in this new role, anointed Kingston as his right hand and set up tonight's main event. You cannot ask for more out of a segment than checking off all of the boxes it set for itself.

The holiday-themed Trick or Street Fight saw Happy Corbin and Madcap Moss battle intercontinental champion Shinsuke Nakamura and Rick Boogs. After a hot start by the babyfaces, the heels turned the tide in their favor, targeting the guitar-playing Boogs with a kendo stick and candy. Nakamura mounted a comeback, but the heels regained control, double-teaming Boogs.
The IC champion eventually launched himself at Corbin, wiping him out at the timekeeper's position. As Boogs scaled the ropes to put Moss away, two costumed competitors appeared and blasted him with kendo sticks. After the heels scored the win, the ghouls revealed themselves to be Humberto Carrillo and Angel Garza.
The heels celebrated to close out the segment.

Analysis
Try as hard as they did, this simply was not good. It was messy, ugly and did nothing to help anyone involved. Why? Because the win came at the hands of Carrillo and Garza, who are clearly a tag team but opted to target a singles champion and his guitarist.
Sure, Nakamura and Boogs have competed as a tag team, but they are not a regular team. Why introduce the new team in a segment involving them? What is there to gain? Do we really believe Garza and Carrillo are going to be allowed to beat Nakamura and Boogs?
The booking, in that regard, made little sense. Even less when you consider Nakamura and Corbin appear headed toward an IC title feud.

The latest chapter in the rivalry between Naomi and Sonya Deville was written Friday night as the WWE official booked herself as the special referee for the former's match with Shayna Baszler.
Despite a spirited effort by the babyface, the numbers advantage proved too much, and Deville executed a fast count that cost her the match.
Afterward, Baszler choked Naomi out with the Kirifuda Clutch and stood tall to close out the segment.

Analysis
When Naomi finally gets her hands on Deville and opens up a Stone Cold can of whoop-ass, the crowd is going to go wild.
The creative team is doing a solid job of creating a desire to see the Queen of Glow take down the WWE official and pay her back for stunting her career. It is working, the fans are into the program and the result will one day be a secondary women's feud that gets fans to invest in its outcome.
That is no short order given the lack of attention WWE pays to programs not involving a title.

The Usos and New Day closed out this week's show, writing the latest chapter of their rivalry in a main event match.
The SmackDown tag team champions dominated the middle portion of the match, taking the fight to King Woods and putting the babyfaces on the defensive. A tag to Kingston sparked a comeback, but a superkick from the twin brothers threatened that flurry.
Jimmy Uso rocked Kingston with a superkick and looked for the pin, but Woods, who tagged in, scored the rollup victory to put his team in title contention.

Analysis
A good, action-packed, high-energy main event between two teams who know each other extremely well. There was nothing new here, nor did there have to be. The teams can go out there on short notice, deliver, and set up a higher-stakes match down the line.
They did just that.
The bigger question mark is the total lack of Roman Reigns on the show. Where was The Tribal Chief, and why wasn't he on the show? It is a question WWE will have to answer eventually because his absence is the type you definitely notice.
