Election is certified
California Secretary of State Shirley Weber last week certified the results of the Sept. 14 gubernatorial recall election, which saw Gov. Gavin Newsom retain his seat by a comfortable margin.
The final tally, as confirmed by Weber's office, was 61.9% of participating voters answering No to the question of shall Newsom be removed from office -- leaving 38.1% of the vote in favor of the recall.
The splits in Alameda County were 81.2% No and 18.8% Yes, making it Newsom's third-highest percentage take (behind San Francisco and Marin counties). Contra Costa County was 71.4% No and 28.6% Yes.
Statewide, the number of registered voters was a record high of just over 22 million; 12,892,578 eligible voters cast ballots in the recall election, for a turnout of 58.45%. A shade over 91% of participating voters cast their ballot via vote-by-mail.
For the second question on the ballot, asking who should replace Newsom if he were recalled, Republican Larry Elder led the way with 3,563,867 votes (48.8% on question two). The next closest was Democrat Kevin Paffrath at 9.6%. Elder's take only represented 27.7% of all voters who cast ballots in the recall, as more than 5.5 million voters apparently left question two blank not supporting any of the recall candidates.
