NFL Scorigami is the kind of freelance Internet data mining project that I just adore. It’s a chart of all the final scores of NFL games, with particular attention paid to those scores that have never occurred. Most of them are strange totals that don’t build easily from sevens and threes, like 25-9 or 36-23.
I bring this up because this weekend, we had two major games finish with the odd score of 32-29, within minutes of each other: Michigan-Nebraska and Notre Dame-Virginia Tech. There have only been six such games in NFL history. Five of them were between 2002 and 2005, including Super Bowl XXXVIII.
You can actually do the same search using College Football Reference’s query tools. There have only been a total of fifteen 32-29 games going back to 1984. This includes Notre Dame’s win over Toledo a couple weeks ago, and the 1997 Florida-Florida State game.
We also had two nearly-simultaneous 45-20 games: Tennessee-South Carolina and Baylor-West Virginia. A later game, Ball State-Western Michigan, also ended with that score. Surprisingly, only four NFL games have ever ended 45-20, but 45 college games have since 1985. Two significant USF football games ended with this score: their most recent FCS win, against East Carolina almost two years ago now, and the “let Quentin Flowers cook” game against Syracuse in 2016. Man, did this program fall apart fast.

After both BrianK19 and Danj725 jumped out to an early lead, they jockeyed back and forth for this week’s best total score. But neither would end up winning it, because this happened:

Speruche has a lead in both races, but he led the money race most of last season as well before dropping off late. In the point race, where two winning weeks is still enough to be in second place, it’s even more wide open.
Week 7 doesn’t have any major national games: the only sure-fire Top 25 game after the new polls come out will be Kentucky-Georgia. In the AAC, USF is back in action against Tulsa; Central Florida-Cincinnati doesn’t look as big as it once did; and Navy visit Memphis in a matchup of teams headed in opposite directions. SMU, Houston, Tulane, Temple, and East Carolina are all off.
