Union College is currently operating without capacity restrictions for its home athletic events, and season tickets remain on sale for the upcoming hockey season, a Union athletic department spokesman said Monday.
While fellow Liberty League member RPI recently announced that it will not allow external spectators at its sporting events for the time being — limiting attendance to students, faculty and staff — Union’s current position is “recognizing that circumstances can change quickly, our intention is to allow spectators for all home events at this time,” beginning with its Sept. 4 football opener against Morrisville State at Frank Bailey Field.
“We will be following the college’s guidance on mask-wearing, which currently highly encourages all Union community members to wear masks while indoors and requires all visitors to campus to wear masks indoors, regardless of vaccination status,” the spokesman said. “That guidance is, of course, subject to change.”
Union did not compete in any fall or winter sports during the 2020-21 academic year due to restrictions related to the novel coronavirus pandemic.
RPI’s decision, which came as part of the school’s return-to-campus plan, included the suspension of season ticket sales for men’s and women’s ice hockey teams, which are the school’s first teams to compete indoors during the academic year.
Season tickets are currently available for Union ice hockey. The Union men’s team is scheduled to play its home opener at Messa Rink on Oct. 15 against Colorado College, with the Union women playing their first home game one week earlier, on Oct. 8 against RPI.
Union’s only fall sports program to play indoors is women’s volleyball, which is scheduled to play its first home game on Sept. 7.
