The winner of Sunday's NASCAR Cup Series race at the Circuit of the Americas made history for his team.

Chase Elliott took home the checkered flag in the rain-shortened EchoPark Texas Grand Prix in Austin, Texas. The win was the 268th in the series for Hendrick Motorsports, tying it with Richard Petty Enterprises for the most wins by a team.

NASCAR's declaring Elliott the winner early capped a wild afternoon of racing and wrecking in the Cup Series' inaugural race at COTA.

Below is more about Elliott's win Sunday, plus the complete results of the race.

Who won the NASCAR race yesterday?

Chase Elliott was declared the winner of the EchoPark Texas Grand Prix when NASCAR ended the race with 14 laps to go because of inclement weather. Elliott won for the first time this season and for the sixth time on a road course in his career.

"I've never won a rain race before, so it's kind of cool. Just super-proud of our team for continuing to fight," Elliott said in a postrace interview, per NASCAR.com.

Elliott took the lead on Lap 50 after Alex Bowman pitted under green. He was still out front four laps later when the race was stopped because of heavy rain and soggy track conditions.

Storms in the Austin area Sunday made racing on the 3.41-mile course extremely risky at times. In one alarming incident, Cole Custer drove his car into the rear of Martin Truex Jr.'s car at a high rate of speed, with Custer's car eventually bouncing off a barrier.

Chase Elliott and Kyle Larson gave Hendrick Motorsports another 1-2 finish, but HMS did not sweep the top four spots at COTA as it did the previous weekend at Dover. Team Penske's Joey Logano and Chip Ganassi Racing's Ross Chastain finished third and fourth, respectively. Kaulig Racing's AJ Allmendinger completed the top five.

Elliott became eligible for NASCAR's Cup Series playoffs with the win. The 2020 series champion is fifth in points after 14 races. Denny Hamlin, who finished 14th Sunday, continues to lead in the standings.

Next up for the Cup Series is the Coca-Cola 600, one of the series' most prestigious races. It is also NASCAR's longest race of the year. The event is scheduled for Sunday, May 30, at Charlotte Motor Speedway (6 p.m. ET; Fox, TSN, PRN).
