Could the federal government still say no to fans?
Marc Antoine Godin, managing editor and senior writer, The Athletic Montreal: The decision was made by the Quebec Minister of Health and Social Services. In Canada’s constitution, health policy is generally a provincial responsibility.
Although in some circumstances, the federal government may decide to act unilaterally when it can assert that the situation is urgent and critical, that it is detrimental to the country as a whole, and that it is of such magnitude that it transcends the powers of the provincial legislatures.
Considering the leeway each province has had so far in managing the COVID-19 pandemic, would this decision really fall under this umbrella? Presumably, the Legault government acted on the assumption that Ottawa would not stand in its way.
It should be noted that earlier in the day, Canada's deputy chief public health officer, Dr. Howard Njoo, did not seem aware of Quebec's imminent intentions when he was quoted by The Canadian Press saying that allowing fans into games was not under "serious consideration" at this point in the pandemic.
How hot a ticket would this be?
Godin: There are certainly a lot of people who will be hesitant initially to gather in crowds, but the Canadiens will have no problem finding 2,500 people on any given night who are comfortable enough to follow social distancing and go cheer for their favorite team in the playoffs.
The question is how the tickets will be distributed. We’ve been told the Canadiens' sales department is still thinking about how to proceed. These seats will be coveted, especially in a context where a majority of adults have received their first vaccination.
And if this can provide a boost for the Canadiens, knowing the Maple Leafs won’t have the same luxury, you can expect those fans to be loud.
