Voters headed to the polls Tuesday across four Mississippi legislative districts to replace state lawmakers who resigned earlier this year.
Polling places closed at 7 p.m. The Clarion Ledger will provide results on this page as they come in.
The special election was called by Gov. Tate Reeves, and for many polling places it served as a warmup for coronavirus protocols ahead of the Nov. 3 presidential election.
At two polling places in Hinds County, a steady stream of voters all wore masks, and elections officials had extras available to hand out in case any voter forgot one. Hand sanitizer and other cleaning supplies were also accessible.
The open seats are in House District 66, previously held by Democrat Jarvis Dortch of Raymond; and District 37, previously held by Republican Gary Chism of Columbus. In the Senate, open seats are District 15, previously held by Republican Gary Jackson of French Camp; and District 39, previously held by Republican Sally Doty of Brookhaven.
Nearly two dozen total candidates competed across the four races. Senate District 39 saw the most candidates, with nine. The secretary of state's office said 1,664 absentee ballots had been requested for the election across the four districts.
If runoffs are needed in any race, they will occur Oct. 13. Runoffs occur when no candidate wins a majority of the vote.
A fifth special election to fill vacant House District 87 is scheduled to go on the Nov. 3 ballot.
