2020 Spring Creek National Motocross Results: Once again, the 2020 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship delivered even more drama in both the 450 and 250MX classes, this time at Spring Creek MX Park in Millville, Minnesota. When all was said and done, it was Adam Cianciarulo capturing his second overall victory in a row, this time with a 1-1, and moving into second place in the 450MX championship, and Dylan Ferrandis taking back the red plate in the 250MX class.
450MX Spring Creek National
Most of the drama at Millville took place in the second set of motos. In the 450MX class, Cianciarulo (Monster Energy Kawasaki) grabbed the holeshot in both motos and withstood heavy pressure by Blake Baggett (Rocky Mountain/WPS/KTM) to take the double-moto victory. Even though he’s a rookie in the class, Cianciarulo rode like a seasoned veteran, as he held off the veteran Baggett, who set the fastest lap time of the first race while stalking Cianciarulo. Just 01.758 seconds separated the two at the finish line.
In the second moto, the two were never separated by more than three seconds, with Baggett finishing 02.760 seconds behind Cianciarulo.
The real drama of the race took place well behind Cianciarulo and Baggett when series points leader Zach Osborne (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna), who finished fourth in the first moto behind Cianciarulo, Baggett and Marvin Musquin (Red Bull KTM), started slowing with a flat front tire late in the race. Osborne said that he did not see his pit board advising him to come in for a wheel change and ended up riding out the race the best he could. He ended up 16th in the moto, his 4-16 giving him 10th overall for the day.
Lucky for Osborne, the rider nearest him in the championship going into the race, Musquin was having his own troubles after falling and bending his motorcycle. He limped home in 10th for what should’ve been a huge point haul on Osborne, who once again made the best out of a bad situation, which has happened to him a few times this season.
Third overall went to Justin Barcia (Monster Energy Yamaha) who was never really in the fray for the win all day. His 5-4, however, did get him on the box.
Chase Sexton was fast all day, especially in the second moto when he was chasing Cianciarulo for the lead. But the Honda rider went down and ended up fourth overall with an 8-3.
Eli Tomac had a quiet day and wasn’t a factor for the win in either moto, the defending champ showing no signs of the Tomac of old. Despite getting two top-10 starts, he could not advance much in either motos. And when he did, it was oftentimes because someone ahead of him fell.
Despite having a rough day, Osborne still leads the 450MX Championship with three rounds to go but the gap has narrowed significantly. He came into the Spring Creek race leading Musquin by 28, but now he leads new runner-up Cianciarulo by just 15 points and Musquin by 20 points. Tomac is 39 points back in fourth.
250MX Spring Creek National
In the 250MX class, Ferrandis took back the red plate from Jeremy Martin after winning both motos, but he truly earned them. Ferrandis had to work hard to get by race leader RJ Hampshire (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna) before he could win the first moto, and he held on for dear life for the second-moto win while being heavily pressured by Martin.
The second moto was a thriller. It started off as a four-rider duel for the lead, involving three Monster Energy/Star Racing Yamaha riders Shane McElrath, Justin Cooper and Ferrandis, and Geico Honda rider, Martin. Unfortunately for McElrath, he washed out in a turn on the second lap. The top three—now Cooper, Ferrandis and Martin—quickly broke free from the rest of the field as they battled hard up front. Cooper held tough, leading the next three laps before both Ferrandis and Martin got around him in fairly quick succession.
Ferrandis, who this season usually pulls away once he gets out in front, couldn’t shake Martin, who was on his home track. For the next 12 laps, the two were never separated by more than 2.6 seconds, which was on the third-to-last lap. Then Martin made a late-race push and nearly got around Ferrandis on the last lap. Instead, Ferrandis took the checkered flag by just 0.411 seconds.
Even though he took second and lost the red plate, Martin will have to look at this race as a sort-of win in that he is the only rider so far this season to at least pressure the Frenchman which will, no doubt, be a confidence booster for Martin.
Ferrandis and Martin were joined on the podium by Martin’s older brother Alex, who gave Suzuki’s its first podium of the year. Alex (JGR/Yoshimura/Suzuki) went 4-4 on the day.
Jett Lawrence (3-6) and Cooper (9-3) rounded out the top five overall.
First-moto winner Hampshire struggled a bit in the second moto. His 2-11 gave him sixth overall.
Ferrandis leads the championship by just three points over Jeremy Martin, followed by Hampshire, who is 52 points back in third. Alex Martin is fourth and McElrath fifth. CN

QUALIFYING
The 2020 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship is back in action at Millville, Minnesota’s Spring Creek MX Park, September 19. It’s chilly here with temperatures in the mid ’60s, quite the change from when this race is usually held in July. Plus, the sun is lower and the leaves are falling.
Chase Sexton clicked off the quickest time of the morning, topping the 450MX class, over the previous-round winner, Adam Cianciarulo. Defending champ Eli Tomac is third, followed by Blake Baggett and points leader Zach Osborne.
In the 250MX class, local favorite Alex Martin laid down the quickest time, not too surprising, since he and his brother, Jeremy, grew up racing here on their family-owned track. Jeremy, the class points leader, was just off Alex’s pace but was fourth quickest behind Yamaha’s Justin Cooper and Dylan Ferrandis.
