2020 Loretta Lynns Pro Motocross Results: There were plenty of “firsts” when it comes to this one. Not only was this the first round of the 2020 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship, but it was also the first National ever held at the famed Loretta Lynn’s track, the first round of the first-ever back-to-back Nationals that will be held at the facility, and it was also the first-ever 450MX victory for Zach Osborne.
Osborne led another near-podium sweep for the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna team, with Jason Anderson taking second overall, and defending series champion Eli Tomac (Monster Energy Kawasaki) third. You might remember that the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Team ran the gauntlet at the final Supercross of the year almost two months ago–which was the last time anyone had raced prior to Loretta’s–with Osborne and Anderson filling the top two steps and Dean Wilson occupying the third step in Salt Lake City.
Anderson kicked off the 2020 MX championship by dominating the first 450 moto. The former Supercross Champion, who has yet to win an outdoor National MX overall, got out in front early and simply ran away from the field. At one point, he had built up a 10-plus-second lead before saving energy for the second moto and taking the checkered flag almost five seconds ahead of Osborne, who started the race in ninth place.
Another rider who came from well back to finish out the moto on the podium was Justin Barcia (Monster Energy Yamaha) who was 14th after the first lap.
In fact, three of the top four riders all had to charge through pack, including Marvin Musquin (Red Bull KTM) who was 11th after the first lap and racing again for the first time this year after injuring his knee. Musquin made a last-lap pass on his teammate Cooper Webb to nab fourth. Adam Cianciarulo was sixth, followed by his teammate Tomac, who was obviously struggling in the moto after running as high as fourth early in the race. Tomac eluded to having suspension set-up issues, saying he was struggling to hang on and “went back to old things we knew” for the second moto.
Blake Baggett (Rocky Mountain ATV-MC/WPS/KTM), Joey Savatgy (JGR/Yoshimura/Suzuki Factory Racing), and Benny Bloss (KT Tape Truck Central/Donnell’s Husqvarna) rounded out the top 10.
In the deciding second moto, Cianciarulo grabbed the early lead only to crash out on the third lap; he was uninjured by his bike was too damaged to continue.
This is when Osborne inherited the lead, and he took full advantage by holding on to it the whole way despite pressure by Tomac late in the race.
Anderson got off to a fourth-place start and was in a position to get the overall before arm pump got the best of him. He drifted back to sixth, but that was still good enough to get him second overall. His 1-6 edged out Tomac’s 7-2.
Tomac looked more like the Tomac we all know after starting off in eighth. This time, he moved forward.
Chase Sexton (Honda HRC) was super impressive in his 450 debut. He was the top qualifier and battled among the leaders in both motos. He was running third in the first moto before suffering the first of a string of falls that put him in 13th by moto’s end. However, he came back and rode fast again in the second moto but this time without the crashes and got on the moto podium in just his second race on the 450. His 13-3 gave the 20-year-old eighth overall.
Baggett went from 10 to fourth in the moto, while Musquin took fifth for fourth overall.
Barcia spent another moto coming from behind after going down just past the first turn. He ended up seventh for fifth overall.
Baggett (8-4) was sixth overall, followed by Webb (5-8), Sexton (13-3), Savatgy (9-11) and Dean Wilson (12-9).
Dylan Ferrandis (Monster Energy Yamaha/Star Racing) owned the 250MX class. The Frenchman clearly showed that he’s going to be the rider to beat for the championship after topping qualifying and “easily” winning both motos.
He basically led from start to finish in the first moto after getting a rare-for-home good start. He proved he could still win after getting a so-so start in the second. Sixth after the first lap, Ferrandis picked off guys like Mitchell Harrison, Alex Martin, Justin Cooper, RJ Hampshire, and Shane McElrath before slipping into the lead and riding off with back-to-back wins on the rutted, rough and technically demanding Loretta Lynn’s track.
Hampshire (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna) proved that he’s back up to speed again after dropping out of Supercross to have knee surgery. He rode strongly in both motos, going 3-2 for second overall.
Jeremy Marten, in his first MX race back since injuring his back almost two years ago, was also impressive, going 2-3 for third overall.
McElrath couldn’t take advantage of two great starts and went 4-4 for fourth overall.
Alex Martin (JGR/Yoshimura/Suzuki Factory Racing) looked good, as well, rounding out the top five with a pair of fives.
Jett Lawrence (Geico Honda), Cameron McAdoo (Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki), Justin Cooper (Monster Energy Yamaha/Star Racing), Mason Gonzales (Rock River Yamaha), who was making his Pro debut after last week’s Amateur MX Championships at Loretta Lynn’s, and Derek Drake (Troy Lee Designs/Red Bull/KTM) rounded out the top 10 overall.
Hunter Lawrence (Geico Honda) suffered a mechanical DNF in the first moto. He finished 14th in the second moto.

QUALIFYING
2020 Loretta Lynns Pro Motocross Results: Finally, motocross is back. The opening round of the 2020 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship officially got underway this morning at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee, at the very same track that the amateurs competed on last week but with some layout changes to add length to the racecourse.
Rain returned to Loretta’s, too. After a dry week of racing for the amateurs, rain hit hard and heavy yesterday, leaving the track thoroughly saturated to start today’s race. It was so muddy in places, that bikes were getting stuck in the muck, requiring teamwork to get them free again. Nick Gaines and even Eli Tomac had their moments. Tomac lost valuable time trying to dig his bike out of the mud and only managed a few hot laps, which no doubt had to do with his “just” seventh-best qualifying time.
The surprise of the morning was 450MX rookie Chase Sexton laying down the quickest time on the muddy, rutted and technical track. His best lap was nearly a full second better than Cooper Webb’s best lap. Only four riders were able to break two minutes: Sexton (1:58.840), Webb (1:59.683), Zach Osborne (1:59.708), and Adam Cianciarulo (1:59.899). The first of the 2s was Justin Barcia (2:00.208).
Dylan Ferrandis almost got under two minutes with a 2:00.222, but it was the best time in the MX2 division. Jeremy Martin, the only former 250MX champ in the field, was next best with a 2:03.847.
Jett Lawrence, Alex Martin, and Justin Cooper rounded out the top five.
The championship sees quite of few riders back in action having recovered from injuries. One of the most notable is Marvin Musquin who sat out the entire Supercross Championship rehabbing from knee surgery. Joey Savatgy is also back, as well as RJ Hampshire in the 250MX class.
Musquin looks good and qualified sixth in 450SX; Savatgy ninth.
Hampshire qualified sixth in 250MX.
Stilez Robertson, who just came out of Loretta’s as the top amateur racing and winning of the Nicky Hayden AMA Motocross Horizon Award, qualified 12th in 250MX.
