For waterfowl hunters participating in the opening day of the resident Canada goose season, fast and furious is a good description.

That best describes the shooting and action associated with the opening minutes of the season. After that initial salvo, however, the memory of the big honkers that survived the previous season seemingly kicks in as self-preservation takes over.

This year, the resident population goose season, as well as the first of three dove seasons, opens Sept. 1, but it is unlikely the opening day success is matched by goose hunters over the duration of the season that closes Sept. 25. Hunters with the persistence to return day after day to the scene of their opening day success may be rewarded with another day or two of action, but to experience the most action it is best to heed the advice of Roger Daltrey by “Going Mobile.”

All that is required for that is some scouting to find feeding areas, putting out a decoy spread and lying down on the job by setting up in the middle of the action by using a layout blind. Light and compact, some layout blinds have shoulder straps that allow them to be carried like a backpack.

Although my departed black Labrador retriever hunting companion Coleman would hunt until I was ready to drop pursuing pheasants and providing plenty of entertainment, he viewed it as a special treat hunting resident Canada geese using a layout blind. He would nap between my legs, splash water on me when drinking from his bowl, but was always ready to spring into action when I sat up through the top of the blind and unleashed the fury of my Remington SP-10.

Lying down on the job to hunt sounds easy, but as with all hunting scenarios those who are most successful are those who do some advance preparation. It is important to plan the exact position of one’s shotgun and the right angle to allow sitting up in a fluid motion when guests arrive.

Practice allows mastering the act of sitting up and shouldering a shotgun as one simultaneous action. By far, this is the most important factor in being able to swing on target as part of a reflex motion.

As for shooting form, all that matters is the barrel is pointed in a safe direction, and should the stock slide from shoulder to the middle of the chest consider it the price for success — if a bird is knocked from the sky. Humility comes quickly when trying to drop geese flying directly overhead, but confidence can quickly be restored when allowing incoming birds directly in front of the blind to descend to several feet above the ground.

Because hunters are completely concealed in a layout blind, there is no need to wear even medium-weight, camouflage clothing. A camo T-shirt, a pair of cargo shorts, ankle-high boots and a baseball cap is the perfect attire for the late summer-like weather encountered in December.

If a few dark purple black-and-blue marks appear from having little protection from wearing light-weight clothing, it’s a small price to pay for the success that can be had by lying down on the job when hunting resident Canada geese.
