Government Ron DeSantis made an appearance on Friday by announcing on Monday that hair and nail salons may reopen on Monday.
DeSantis made the announcement via Twitter and Facebook because of a video showing John Henry, owner of a barber shop in downtown Orlando. DeSantis met with Henry, Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings, and other hair and nail salon owners last Saturday at the barber shop as they made an argument to allow their businesses to reopen.
During the short video presentation, Henry said he was happy to join DeSantis in announcing the reopening plan of the personal services company with refreshed security protocols that are still outlined. DeSantis ’Reopen Florida Task Force had suggested to those employees that they wear masks, constantly clean their workstations and have customers wait outside the salons before appointments.
“We’re ready to go back to work and earn some money,” Henry said. “But going back to work, we want to be safe and continue to wear our gloves, wear a mask, book appointments and continue to keep the community safe.”
Henry said he knows customers across the state of Sunshine – with the exception of those who are still in order to stay home in Miami-Dade and Broward contacts – are eager to support the personal service lounges where many are long-term customers.
“They’re very enthusiastic,” Henry said. “We’re going to open on Monday.”
Ocala Mayor Kent Guinn
The current DeSantis change came on the same day that Ocala Mayor Kent Guinn announced that he had ordered Chief of Police Greg Graham and his officers to ignore plans to reopen the Phase One of the Governor. Those include mandates for restaurants to operate at 25 percent capacity in their rooms and have tables spaced at least six feet above the outside patios. And in addition to hair and nail salons, DeSantis ’original reopening lines have also prevented the reopening of gymnasts and fitness centers.
Friday’s announcement did not change the tight guide on restaurants and did not allow for reopening. But in Ocala, Guinn said his officers did not enforce these rules and did not prevent groups of 10 or more from meeting. He said the Phase One order violates the community’s right to freedom of assembly and freedom of religion.
It was unclear Friday night what could happen to Ocala business owners who ignore DeSantis ’order if state combat agencies get involved. They could likely face repercussions from agencies such as the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation and the Lake Health and Safety Administration, among others.
Guinn’s press conference also followed a post he posted on his Facebook page on May 2, which shares his frustration with the protected reopening plan. He said he had spent at least five minutes trying to find a parking space in Lowe’s home modification store, but other businesses were strictly limited or prevented from reopening entirely.
Marion County Commission Chairwoman Kathy Bryant recently urged Gov. Ron DeSantis to reconsider its Reopen guidelines in Florida regarding restaurants, gyms and fitness centers, hair and nail salons.
Guinn’s position against DeSantis followed a similar position taken last week by Marion County Commission Chairman Kathy Bryant. She held a press conference on April 30 and made it clear that she and her commissioners did not agree on any part of the governor’s plan to reopen Florida. She hired DeSantis to follow the recommendations of her own task force and allow restaurants, gyms and personal service providers to reopen capacity by 50 percent during Phase One.
Earlier this week, Bryant also partnered with Lake County Commission Chairman Leslie Champion and Levy County Commission Chairman Matt Brooks to again implore DeSantis to allow its accounts to use the plan. reopening of task forces for restaurants, gymnasts and personal service providers. Bryant said he understood DeSantis was busy but was frustrated that Marion’s county officials hadn’t forgotten him since he posted the request to loosen the reopening guidelines.
