CHEYENNE, WYO. – Weather forced the Colorado State cross country programs to split their season opener between Friday evening and Saturday morning, but that didn't matter much as they were on the same page, finishing first in each of their races at Little America Golf Course.
The conclusion of the women's 5,000-meter race on Friday was met with heavy rain and lightning. Although the first dissipated, the latter did not, causing the men's race to get postponed until Saturday morning at 6:30 a.m. The weather caused official results of race one to get delayed, but the feeling around was of excitement for the ladies and head coach Art Siemers, which usually is the case when you place three runners in the top-5 including the winner.
An impressive debut it was for the No. 27-ranked women's team [CSU] in the country as they finished above No. 8 Colorado and far ahead of Colorado School of Mines, Wyoming, Western Colorado and Northern Colorado. First to cross the finish line was redshirt-junior Claudia Burgess for her best placement as a Ram with a time 17:17.4. The Boulder native is in her third year at CSU after transferring from Oregon, which is significant because she will return to Eugene later this month (9/23) for the Bill Dellinger Invitational. Another Ram who is in their third at CSU after transferring back to their home state from a Power Five school and thriving is Lauren Offerman who finished third at 17:17.9. Rounding out the top five and placing fifth for the Rams was Annabel Stafford, a redshirt-sophomore, running in just her third cross country race at CSU.
"A true show of our team atmosphere on our women's team happened at the finish line where I was at," head coach Art Siemers said. "Claudia and Lauren were running close in the pack, but CU's top runner was closing in. Lauren shouted out to Claudia 'She's coming, you need to kick!'. It helped Claudia finish strong and win the race as that girl was coming fast in her final kick. I just love it when the team is looking out for each other. That unselfishness is what champion teams are made of."
Being delayed and then postponed to an early wake-up call of 5 a.m. to get on a bus was an unplanned test for the men that they passed with flying colors. Colorado and Mines had to drop out of competition due to the altered schedule, but the Rams kept their performance up, defeating Wyoming by a healthy margin and putting five Rams in the top 10. Crossing back-to-back-to-back from third to fifth was Thomas Chaston, Brock Dykema and Mason Brown. Completing the 15-second pack split was Tanner Norman and Jacob Brueckman in seventh and eighth place, respectively.
"I'm really proud of how the guys responded this morning," Siemers said. "They wanted to race last night. I loved their attitude of not complaining about getting up this morning and going back up to Cheyenne. They were very positive and upbeat. It translated to their performance as they executed really well. We always talk about having a small pack split and it being a key to success, and they kept that today, which is really important going forward in having a strong team."
ART'S THOUGHTS
Head Coach Art Siemers
More on the women…
"The women have really been developing their confidence and it all stems from last year when they made it to the National Championships for the first time in all those years. It was a growing year, and the confidence is spilling over. They had a great summer of training, and they just came in against some very good competition and went straight to the front to control the race. They crushed it on that course, which is hard to do at altitude. They held the lead against CU even though the Buffs did have an unattached girl that would have scored as well. We still ran them very strong, which is encouraging because they are a favorite going into NCAAs every year. It was a big step for our progress. The thing about really good teams is when teammates step up, which was the case for a few last night that haven't really scored for us before. Those individuals have put in the work over the track season and summer to put themselves in a position to contribute. That's a testament to how strong our team has become. We saw how much Claudia [Burgess] had improved in workouts, but that is the easy part. The hard part is translating it into racing, and she did that with an impressive effort and a fast time."
More on the men…
"The change of schedule was unfortunate, because we weren't able to race CU or Colorado School of Mines – both great teams. However, we still faced some good competition to start off the year. Wyoming is a rival and Western Colorado is one of the best NCAA DII programs out there. It was a tough course too, but we accomplished everything we wanted by running hard and staying as close as we could in terms of pack splits."
