LEE COUNTY, Fla. – The Lee County School District will once again allow parents to opt their child out of the district’s face covering requirement starting Tuesday, Sept. 14.

This comes after the 1st District Court of Appeal instituted a stay, meaning the Florida Department of Education can continue to enforce its interpretation of the parental opt-out until the matter is resolved in court.

The district originally started with the opt-out option at the beginning of the school year before enforcing a 30-day mask mandate at all Lee County schools on Sept. 1. Under the mask mandate, parents could only opt-out for their children if they had a medical exemption.

When the 30-day mask mandate was first announced, chaos broke out outside the Lee County School District’s headquarters.

Because the stay only applies to students, district employees will still be required to wear masks and follow the medical exemption process, Lee County Schools Superintendent Dr. Ken Savage said.

“I implore you to prove your commitment to each other by getting vaccinated, wearing a mask, and following other safety protocols to help us get through this surge together,” Dr. Savage said.
