BEREA, Ohio -- Berea City Schools Director of Academic Affairs Adam Marino presented the district’s 2020-21 spring state standardized test results to the Board of Education at its Sept. 7 work session.
The results, which compared students’ scores against the state average, were simply “one snapshot in time,” he emphasized.
Data indicated scores slightly below the state average in English language arts in grades 5-8. Math results in grades 5 and 7, as well as in grade 8 algebra I and geometry, also fell below the state average.
The biggest variance was in grade 7 math, at 17 percent below state average, followed by 11 percent gaps in grade 5 math and grade 8 geometry. Results for grade 8 science came in 6 percent below the state average.
“These results create the District Report Card, and it is an evolving assessment,” Marino explained.
State metrics that measure achievement have changed through the years. The biggest change will occur this school year, he said.
“(The District Report Card) will be going from an A through F grading system to a five-star rating, and all the metrics … are adjusted,” Marino said, with each star representing an entire set of measurements.
“In terms of the test scores, the goal is always to try to get better … (and) to increase student achievement,” he added. “Test scores are the by-product of student growth.”
Planned district actions include streamlining goals, objectives and action steps into an annual district improvement plan, as well as strengthening the teacher and leadership teams in each building. The district also will provide professional development to aid in implementing instructional strategies.
“I believe focusing on what we teach, and how we teach it, is the right playbook for us to get to where we want to go,” Marino said.
“The goal is not to ace these tests, but to understand the material. The kids are more than a number on tests.”
