Albany, N.Y. — New York is launching a new version of its Covid-19 vaccine passport, the Excelsior Pass, that will allow people to use it in more places.
The Excelsior Pass lets New Yorkers upload a code to their mobile devices that can be scanned by any businesses or other entities that need proof of vaccination or a negative Covid test. The system also allows you to print out a paper pass that can be scanned.
The new version, known as Excelsior Pass Plus, will now be accepted anywhere that uses the SMART Health Card vaccine passport. An international consortium developed the SMART cards and they’re used at sites in other states and around the world, according to Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office.
New Yorkers who have been vaccinated against Covid-19 can get an Excelsior Pass online, including the new version. The Excelsior scanner app, which businesses use to scan customers’ passes, will be updated to accept the new version of the pass by mid-August.
New York partnered with VCI, the developer of SMART cards, on the expansion of Excelsior Pass.
Cuomo’s office also announced a new Excelsior Pass partnership today with American Airlines. New Yorkers will now be able to use the Excelsior Pass Plus to provide vaccination proof when flying American to Greece, France, Spain, Italy and the Bahamas and on indirect flights to El Salvador, Germany, Guatemala, Honduras and Puerto Rico.
More destinations will be added in the future, according to Cuomo’s office.
The pass has been used by major tourist destinations and event venues that require vaccination proof from patrons. They include Broadway theaters, Public Theater’s free Shakespeare in the Park, the Metropolitan Opera at Lincoln Center, Madison Square Garden, Barclays Center and Yankee Stadium.
In addition, Marriott International will make use of the pass available to meeting and event planners at its over 200 properties in New York, Cuomo’s office said.
New York state will accept the pass as vaccination proof from state workers, who will be required to get vaccinated or face weekly Covid testing starting in September.
New York launched the Excelsior Pass earlier this year.
