Hawaii will not allow fans at season openers for fall sports, including football, amid the surge in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations across the state, the school announced on Friday. The school's policy is in line with city and Honolulu County orders.

Other sports included in the no-fan policy are women's soccer and women's volleyball. Hawaii will re-assess the policy in the coming weeks.

"We are disappointed because we were looking forward to playing in front of our fans again," UH Mānoa athletics director David Matlin said in a statement. "However we understand the decision was made in the best interest of public safety and can only hope the restrictions will be lifted when the time is right."

The university's decision comes during an increase in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations around the U.S. The state of Hawaii has registered 8,842 cases of the virus in the last 14 days.
