Mark Drakeford is set to continue as Wales' first minister after Labour won the most seats in the Senedd election.

The party won 30 of the 60 available seats, beating the Conservatives, with 16, Plaid Cymru on 13 and the Liberal Democrats on one.

Labour has been in power in Wales, either in coalition or as a minority, for the past 22 years.

Mr Drakeford, the party leader, has said the next Welsh government would be "radical" and "ambitious".

Labour did fall one seat short of the 31 needed for an outright majority, but this is a feat no party has ever achieved in the history of the Welsh Parliament.

Fifty-two of the 60 Senedd seats were declared on Friday, with two final regional lists giving results on Saturday.

Both the South Wales East and South Wales Central constituencies returned two Welsh Conservative and two Plaid Cymru Members of the Senedd (MS).

In South Wales East, Delyth Jewell and Peredur Owen Griffiths were elected for Plaid, while Laura Anne Jones and Natasha Asghar will represent the region for the Welsh Conservatives.

In South Wales Central, the leader of the Welsh Conservatives, Andrew RT Davies, was one of the two Tories elected, along with Joel James.

Rhys ab Owen and Heledd Fychan will represent Plaid Cymru in the region.

All results were declared by 14:00 BST on Saturday.

Mr Drakeford was pictured being sworn in as an MS in the Senedd building in Cardiff Bay on Saturday,

He said: "A government I lead will continue to follow the science to do what our medical advisers tells us we should do, and that does mean doing things in a way that continues to keep Wales safe.

"But on other matters, our manifesto is a radical manifesto with a host of ideas that are ambitious for Wales.

"I'll be very keen to ensure that we give that the most powerful sense of momentum behind it to get those things happening here in Wales."

The 30 seats won by Mr Drakeford's Labour Party matches their best result in the history of Welsh Parliament elections.

Labour's Huw Irranca Davies, who was re-elected in Ogmore, told BBC Wales on Saturday that it was possible the party "could say we will now got it alone and govern in the interests of the people in Wales as Welsh Labour".

"To actually take 30 seats is quite a remarkable achievement and I don't think you will find anyone who said they saw this one coming," he said.
