A parcel tax proposed by San Marino Unified faltered at the polls, failing to gather the two-thirds majority it needed to pass, according to the final tally released by election officials on Thursday, March 11.

The parcel tax, known as Measure E, won 63.04% of the final vote. It fell short of the 66.67% it needed to pass.

The final results come more than a week after the March 2 special election. There had been several updates since then, but Measure E slipped in the polls in every new tally, save for the first.

Measure E was identical to an existing parcel tax, also known as Measure E, which had been in place since 2009 and will expire on June 30.

If it hadn’t faltered in the polls, the new Measure E would have extended the parcel tax indefinitely, or until voters chose to end it.

The district has collected about $4 million annually from the previous Measure E. To fund this, every property owner in the district pays $968 each year, or a little more than $80 a month, regardless of property value.

In a board of education resolution that put Measure E on the ballot, district officials said the money is necessary because state funding is “inadequate to provide the level of support to the district’s education programs that the residents of the district expect.”

According to the district’s website, existing Measure E funds support the salaries of 34 teachers, three counselors and four technology support positions. Officials say the money keeps class sizes smaller and preserves many of its extracurricular activities.
