FORT MYERS, Fla.– Local craft distilleries could soon become the next cool place to hang out and enjoy a few drinks with friends.

Right now, distilleries in Florida can’t sell drinks, although they can offer samples of their spirits. That could soon change if some lawmakers have their way.

Currently, craft distilleries in Florida are allowed to produce just 75 thousand gallons of alcohol every year but a new bill aims to increase that.

The change would allow places like Wicked Dolphin in Cape Coral to produce up to 25k gallons of alcohol a year.

The company produces thousands of bottles of rum in it’s building off Pine Island Road.

However, 2020 was a rough year for the distillery, which produces 13 different products.

Joseph Termini works there and said the company likes to create new products. One product they never expected to create was hand sanitizer.

They turned to producing it during the sanitizer shortage, at the height of the pandemic.

However, with 2020 behind them it’s now full steam ahead producing and aging rum.

If the bill passes and is signed by the governor, it could go into effect as soon as July 1st.
